I'm new to the hobby been at it for about 6 months now started with a 37gallon and just recently upgraded to a 55gallon now I have about 80lbs of live rock and 1 bag of live sand mix with some seachem sand I'm currently running and (I know I know nitrate factory and the hole nine) sun sun canister filter 3stage with built in 9w uv a 925gph power head a 30"coralife t5 and a aquatic life edge led 24" and I have a coralife bio cube protein skimmer but it's way to small and in the process to upgrade. I'm currently using reef crystal salt by instant ocean my salinity-1.025
Ammonia-0ppm
Nitrite-0ppm
Nitrate-40ppm now I jus did a 10gallon water change and replace the filter inside the canister and clean it out so those are the readings before the w/c haven't check it agin yet. Now like I said previously I just upgraded I had saved water from the 37gallon only about 10gallons and the live sand out of the tank and used it in the 55gallon that I just started I've had the tank running for two weeks and just got my diatom bloom so my question are
1. I have a clownfish that I would love to get out of the 10gallon quarantine because I had jump the gun and bought a coral beauty and well let's just say she cost me a lot of money I gotta by all new cuc and I lost my pair of matings clowns.

2.are there any good ways to run a canister filter?.
3. How big of water changes should I be doing a week?
4. And any other advice you guys could give ALL is appreciated!!. Thanks ahead of time oh by the way brand new to this so sorry if I posted this in the wrong place or anything.

If your not running a reef tank, nitrates shouldn't be an issue. I don't see a problem with the canister. Feed every other day. Do your water changes and put a decent skimmer on the tank. You can do weekly water changes,I recomend 5gal a week. A nitrate of 40ppm is not bad. Good luck with your new tank.

Well I eventually plan on housing anemone for the clown and keeping some softies like some Xenia and zoanthids and stuff?

BTA's dont mind nitrates i keep mine between 60-80 to grow macro algae and my anemones are doing great. they are some of the more forgiving and accepting of anemones and imo a good beginner nem

I agree with everyone above but will add. DO NOT SKIMP on Maintenance on that canister I would say at first open it every two weeks and see how bad it is and at least replace its filter pads. Get a few sets to change out....

I Cant grow xenia in my tank because its very nutrient low.... If your not growing lps sps corals your prob going to be ok. Back to Back water changes can help lower them. Just 1 will barely touch them

I appreciate everyone for the info.
So what I'm gathering so far is that I should be able to add the clownfish to my tank and anmone and as long as I keep up on my maintenance I should be fine correct?

You can add the clown if the tank is processing ammonia into nitrates but you should wait a year or so before adding an anemone. You will need strong lighting as well as proper flow for the nem to be happy. Water quality and stability are important.
