Looking good now

After a couple of months working out the kinks and getting my tank back into shape, we finally are where we think we want to be! We just added a Rose BTA to our tank to for the mated false precs we picked up from a friend. He sold us the percs and the RBTA for a reaasonable price and seeing how he can almost split his RBTA's at will he was more than happy to sell us one with some xenia and other polyps with it. Now he's back down to four RBTA's! We only want to add one mor fish to the tank and that will be a Flame angel. I pushed for a Coral Beauty but the wife really wants the Flame angel!. With the 2 false percs, orange spotted goby and the neon dotty I feel we will have rounded out our 46 gallon bow front just nicely. Will post a few pics as soon as I get my hands on a digital camera! The Bullseye mushrooms are a sight to see!

If your tank just got to a balanced state, the RBTA may be a bit premature, do keep a close eye on water quality.

You can induce them to split by subjecting them to a bit of stress. I have seen guys that can induce this magic level of stress pretty well. You just do not want to be causing any more stress after it is in your system for some time

I test the water every day! After a big crash due to my daughter feeding an entire canister of food to the tank two years ago we let the tank just sit for about 18 months doing nothing to it so when we started 2 months ago we have been very diligent as to the water qualtiy. Lots of help from Dave (the guy I got the BTA from). I test for PH, ammonia, nitrite, calcium, phosphates, alk, and specific gravity. Just installed a coralife super skimmer and got rid of my CPR bakpak. I am considering adding a 10 gal tank to it and making a sump any Ideas? iCam.. gets cold here in the winter and can be a bit of a challenge keeping the house warm enough for the tank at times!!

Got the camera now so as soon as i figure out the camera and the lights come on I will snap a few pics and post them when i get home from work tonite! Will pm anybody interested when the pics come on line so you can get a glimpse of the tank. Will post more when I have time to take more pics. Won't have a lot of time today before I got to go to work!

rivank, with your testing habits you should have a good, stable tank. That's what it takes.

I'd like to think so! My wife says if we continue to spend the money we do on it then I better make sure it don't crash!

Got the pictures taken finally and will have them posted tomorrow hopefully. Randall, how do I setup the 10 gal as a sump and what purpose is it actually serving. I am doing it just cuz everyone talks about what a great thing they are I guess. Don't really know anything about them. No body around here that I know runs one.

Well I wish I could say it is a "Simple" task to setup a sump but it does take a bit of planning and work.

A sump can do a number of things such as provide a spot for heaters, auto topoffs, grow macro algae (the best use IMO) and provide an out of site place to put a skimmer even.

You will need an overflow box of some type if the tank is not drilled, a hose to get water to the sump, and a pump to return the water to the tank.

For some detailed images and hints, check http://melevsreef.com and click into the "Sumps" section, he has done a nice job (much better than I could do here)

I just put a sump on my new tank I am building. Its a 40 gallon and I used a 10 gallon, i love it, everything is under the stand, all i have in the tank is a powerhead and a ProClear overflow, works great. It usues the utube system, very reliable.

Hope this helps.

Hey Rob, is there any way you could get me a good pic of your over flow? I have posted my sump idea under the thread name "Sump Idea" in this same forum. I just want a quality view of what I'm dealing with here. Everything I've seen to date is unclear. Thanks

i will photo it tonight when i get home from multiple angles.

if your tank is not a "Reef Ready" (meaning it has an overflow built in) you need a box similar to this one:

The box with the notches goes inside the tank, the box with the fittings sits outside the tank. The "U" Tube provides the flow

OUTSTANDING!! How reliable is the utube in providing the siphon? Will it hold if there is no flow? Or will I experience a flood effect if the flow is cut? And where the heck can I get one like that?!!

i got my pro clear at my local lfs, its exactly like the one picture above, as far as keeping the siphon, i have done about 3 power failure simulations, and all 3 times it started right back up
