Looking to learn more about saltwater, reefs, etc.

Long story short, I was crippled in a car accident years ago, and after several back surgeries...if got a lot of free time. I live near 67th Ave and Union Hills in Glendale, but would just like to volunteer my time in exchange for learning more... Tanks and fish have almost always been part of my life, and I'm looking to start with a small reef to fill my time. Problem is I know very little and don't want to set out to fail. Joined here years ago to learn and have read much, but had a few set backs. Anyway, I figured it couldn't hurt to post. Thanks for your time!

I like MrSaltwatertank's videos and digital books. I like you read a lot on forums and learned bits and pieces but in his books it really organizes the basics in chronological order of setting up a system and it put all the bits and pieces from the forum together. He has a lot of videos too.

Reading on the forums is always great, but really you're not going to learn anything until you have a problem that needs to be fixed. So bottom line, setup a tank and learn as you go. Maybe check out one of the frag swaps or go to the next parade of reefs.

Reading is a good start.
I would check out the frag meetings and ask questions. my best advice is to find a mentor!! Someone you can meet up with and do things together and learn from there mistakes.
setting up a small tank would be nice too so you can get used to the routine and husbandry involved.
happy reefing.
and don't hesitate on asking questions.

Thank you all for the suggestions... I'm currently helping a friend with his 110 bow front DT and new 34g red sea max. I'm going to look at a red sea max 130d myself sat. Brian, thank you for suggestion, as that was whole reason for the post.... Figured I've got plenty of time and would like to get more involved in community. Even just meeting up for coffee with someone and BS'ing about tanks works, as I know safety and meeting new people might be asking a bit much in the start. Take care and I'm sure you will see me around RC.

Welcome to the group!

The forums are certainly a great start. You will be able to find people and knowledge that will help you out tremendously.

We are having a PROP auction tomorrow in Scottsdale. Swing by if you can.

I'm helping set up a friends reef tank tomorrow, and maybe pic up my own rsm 130d, but going to try to get down there... Hope to see you all there!

As many will tell you, ask and you shall receive. The forum is a great place to get any info you need. Let us know what you need and you will find people to help. Again, welcome!!

I wanted to apologize to everyone for not showing up today, as it was on the agenda, but ran into a few issues with the new reef tank. It took almost all day to rewire cut up lights, switches etc... What a mess, but it is done and looks great now. I hope you all had fun and I'll catch you at the next meeting!

I watched several hundred videos on YouTube while in the process of setting up my 40 gallon tank. The YouTube channels NewYorkSteelo, BRSTV, VividAquariums, & MrSaltwaterTank were helpful to me. I am pretty new to the saltwater addiction myself. The folks on this forum are really friendly & help you when you have questions.
