other then Haddoni, I saw this one at the LFS and it was red but it was not a haddoni hoping someone here may have one like it so I now what type it is. The LFS just called it a purple carpet

gigantea perhaps

one of the hardest anemones to keep along with the ritteri

I know Rob's Reef has a pic of one, can't remember his web site at the moment.

What was different about it that makes you think it wasn't haddoni?

There are some pics of different carpet species in the Anemone FAQ at the top of this forum.

This is a good carpet picture thread:

You can see pictures of my two S. gigantea, for reference, in this thread:

There are some markers to look for if you can't tell what species it is. Presence of different coloured verrucae (bumps on the column), for example - haddoni don't have contrasting verrucae; but only haddoni have variegated patterns. The tentacle size and shape can also help.

To be honest a red carpet of any species, if healthy, is worth jumping on. FWIW I've never seen a red gigantea and if there is such a thing, that would be a VERY impressive find. Red haddoni's, to give you an example, retail for $400 and up south of the border.

Purple, OTOH, I have seen in both haddoni's and gigantea's. But purple is also a somewhat more rare find as well.

Can you go back and take a picture of this one? I'd love to see it.

Yes I think it is a gigantea its like a shaggy carpet from the 70s and it is blood red and its only $150cdn and its about 8ins so its a good find then I think I will go back and buy him

Jump on it -- as far as I'm concerned a red gigantea, as long as it's healthy, would be the deal of the century at any price.

Good luck and please post pics! You have no idea how jealous I am. I had to wait 4 years to find a brown gigantea in cowtown, and another year before I could find a green one after that. Purple or red -- forget it, I don't expect to see one like that over here in my lifetime.
