Looking to upgrade my lighting

I was wondering if this was a good light or not. It fits my price range (I don't have a job since I'm 14 so I'm running of of Christmas cash). I watched a lot of videos on lighting and I was wondering if this would be a good replacement for my blue florescent t8. I've just been using the lights that I got with the tank. A 12" white led bar, a 12" blue led bar, and a 2' blue florescent t8. Before you say it, I know this is crappy lighting but I haven't had the money to upgrade yet. If there are any other light recommendations in the $50 range please let me know, or if not I'll figure out a way to get a better, more expensive light. Thanks. Here's the link. Look at this on eBay

Nah. I don't think so. If you are wanting led I would look at the Chinese black box style leds. Some folks have good luck with them. I didn't, but that was with acropora largely

Long term costs the chinese black box would be best. Personally I would just get a t5 grow light though. They will grow anything and can be had for like $100 without bulbs

I have a Chinese black box for sale I'll let go for 40$ I switched some leds on it to UV

Are you just wanting to light up the tank? It states FOWLR in the auction description, if that's the case that light fixture will do.

I'm looking to upgrade my lighting so that I can keep sps. I haven't had much luck with them so far.

An admirable goal. I suggest rereading Sean / swk relating his experience and lack of success with Chinese LED boxes and acros (Acropora / sps).

I'd like to have the right lighting for sps and acros once my tank is ready for them.

You could probably find a halide ballast pendant for pretty damn cheap. That or t5 will be your best bet on starting with acropora.

The best way to learn to be successful with acros is to limit husbandry skills that could/couldn't cause problems. Eliminating lights as a possible issue can make your life a lot easier while you're getting your stick keeping skills down.

Does the type of t5 light bar matter? Or is it just the colors, wattage, and amount it holds that matters?

The grow light fixtures off amazon work well. I have one over my tank and it's done great even with the bulbs and reflectors having salt creep all over them.

I have a 20" 150W sunpod fixture. It's old but I was using it to grow SPS just last year. For $50 I'll throw in a new 14K Phoenix bulb. There's also one in the fixture that has probably 3 months on it.
