Well the time has finally come. The Pet/Animal Adventure store is officially closing doors on Nov. 16th after 6 years of serving the Green Bay area. Its a sad time for everyone involved but life goes on.

I already have a job offer to run the Appleton store's SW dept. so you might see me there soon. I'll keep you guys posted.

I would like to thank everyone who helped support the store over the years. I had a great time while it lasted!

Sorry for the bad news but I knew this was coming for a few months now.

Spike, hopefully we'll see you down here. The Appleton store's current saltwater setup is...less than impressive. I was terribly disappointed last time I went in there. He used to have some decent corals at decent prices. This time around (a couple weeks ago), most of the lights weren't even working.

Sorry to see you go Spike. I hope that you will stay active in the club. Any word on what Scotty is going to set his sights on next?

Jason

Well I took the job in Appleton and will be starting to make changes as early as this weekend. I have plenty of equipment and space to work with and a much better sitiuation than I had at the GB store.

First off I am adding 250 gallon refugiums to the main 150 gallon coral display and the main fish system. A lot of bioball media etc.. will be removed. The smaller fish system will also have a fuge set-up in the same manner. All sick fish will be placed in several hospital tanks. The main fish systems will have LR and macro algea running on a reverse photo period. Some of those tanks will be devoted to soft corals and polyps as well. All the fish systems will have adequate skimmers to go allong with the refugiums. The main coral display tank will be skimmerless and very lightly stocked with fish that will be mostly algae grazers.

The main 150 gallon coral display is going to get new hqi halide bulbs and a rack set-up for SPS and LPS frags. Some large colonies will be placed along the remaining rockwork. Clams and exotic zoos will also be placed in this tank along with some softies.

It looks like I may be stepping into a good situation and I am excited to move on and get things going.

I hope you all like what I have planned and I hope to get exceptional results.

Jason~

I have no idea what Scott is going to do but if he does get something going I most likely will be involved unless things go better for me in Appleton.

I'll keep you guys posted as things develop.

Cheers and happy reefing!

Wow he's going to let you do all THAT?

I actually applied for a job there a few yrs ago and he said he did'nt have anyone just to do saltwater or fish. I'm hoping he lets you do all that.
I have almost every animal in the store and he still did'nt hire me cuz I told him I did'nt care for reptiles and did'nt wanna do those lol.

Hope everything goes well for you there Spike.

Thanks kass.

It may sound like I am doing a lot but all we need is a few timers, some coral racks, macro algae and new bulbs. The rest of the stuff needed is already there. I just need to shift some things around.

I'll be starting on the 150 first. I first need to decide on which hqi bulbs I am going to run in the halides.

All in all it should be a somewhat simple transition and should not take me more than a week or so to complete for the most part.

Spike, that wasn't you there testing the water on the big display last night, was it? I swung by for some crickets while I was at Lowe's and noticed that someone said "let there be light!"

Whoda thunk corals like light, eh?

Yep that was me Fred. The tanks tested very well for nitrates (0 ppm for the 150 and 0-5 ppm for the main fish system). Calcium and alk need to be bumped up a bit but I expected that.

The halide pendents they have are so covered with salt creep and calcium deposits that the light is being blocked considerably. I told the owner the corals were not getting enough light due to the splash shields being so caked. All those brown leathers and polyps are coming out of that tank though to make room for a new order from my wholesaler. I will have those pendants cleaned up with new bulbs and placed closer togethor before the order comes in. The cheap bulbs in them are are at least 8 months old and look like crap IMO. I am going to remove the shields from the PCs so they run brighter and cooler.

They also had the returns on the 150 kicking up way too much salt spray and had them poorly positioned. This contributed to the splash shields on the halides deteriorting quite rapidly. The tank is already getting much more flow and will be getting some more. Since I am running on a budget I think I am going to go with 14K Phoenix bulbs over the 150. I am open to other suggestions though. I want a bulb that's a bit on the blue side and excites the fluorescent colors of the corals.

So how does everything I have planned sound so far? I'd like to get your input and any other ideas or input on things I may have overlooked.

Thanks
~Spike

Everything sounds really good to me! I'll make sure I say hello next time I'm in there if I see you.

I really like my 14k EVC bulbs...color is fantastic and output is good as well. The only place I've found that has them is Ocean Encounter. They're very nice for the money.

Spike, you're awesome and I look forward to seeing all that you've done, and buying a new prize as well, next time I get down to Appleton! Congrats and good luck! :D

what's the name of the store you will be working at and not to be greedy or vulteur like but when is the close out sale and is Scott getting rid of the metal racks and such my grandpa is a salvage dealer

He mentioned that he is going to retain ownership of many such items and keep his options open... But you may still want to call on him for the final say, if you interest is there, don't let little ole me detour you.

I stopped and bought a frag and had him bag it up for old time sake... then I gave hime a hug... Scotts' ben around for a LONG time and it kinda gives me a lump in my throat, like saying good bye to a good friend that your not sure you'll see again. I remember buying my Piranahs from him whenhe worked at Advanced and that was before I graduated from HS like 91'. And Tetras when I was younger.... like before HS even...

I always throught he should be incharge of his own store. Perhaps in a small way, this is a stepping stone for him, as to ride a bike you must learn how to fall off and make it look cool and do it with finesse... and it looks like he's conducting this closing with class and dignity, and it's not just a free for all tag match. I have no doupt he'll ride again - and we'll all want to be like him again... I had a chance to speak with him, and the chips and cards have been pretty tough on him... I think he did very well, but sometimes you need to take a step back from the table and watch a hand or two, and I think that's what's going to happen...

Good luck Scotty. God Speed my friend, and don't stay away too long.

I feel like a giant jerk of a vulture now and it's not your fault jmkarcz sometimes i think self profit over the people i may profit from and i am sorry for that

Well the store officially closed doors yesterday. The bank let Scott have all the fish tanks and equipment and he is going to open up an aquarium store. I will still be on board to help develop and design a new fish room including a SW section.

I may end up working in Appleton and here in Green Bay for Scott. Right now many things are uncertain but it looks like things might be headed in that direction.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Spike

stopped by the appleton store yesterday (11/10) afternoon to check out the improvements. Def. looking better than two weeks ago. Some light on the big display tank really made a difference and holy salt creep between the big display tank and the smaller fish only tanks!

If I could make a suggestion though, I would find a way to feature that small acrylic bow front 'display only tank' more prominently. Small, attainable tanks like that help to spark interest in the hobby. Get the clown back in there too!

Good luck!

Well, I may have to go back to AAP again. The times I have been in there in the past I was totally disgusted with the condition of the fish and corals. It sounds like some badly needed improvements.

It looks like Tue or Wed that I'll start on setting up the refugiums and moving some things around. We'll see how it goes.
