Lost 2 fish

We lost two fish during the rebuild of our tank room. We lost a yellow tang and a half black angel. :(

Water seemed to be fine just the other day. Not sure if the VOCs from the paint or the liquid nails made them ill or not.

But not to worry, those Dang Damsels are fine.

it'll be easier for you..... well is the tank going in the same place or will you be able to go straight from one tank to the other?

i think his tank is going in same spot, last time i was over

Yep, new tank is going where the current tank is now. That's why I want to get the fish room set up and hook it up to the current tank, let it cycle that way for about a week to two week's then move every thing down stairs and store it there while the current tank get's tore down and the new one get's set up. Put Sand, LR and water in, hook up both CLS pumps and cycle it for a couple day's with them. Then open the drains and returns on the new tank let it cycle for a 24 hours then move corals and critters into the tank. I figure it would be just like acclimating them in a bucket if I let the tank water start mixing in with the water they are living in.

I just started wondering though, all my fish and critter's get along pretty well now, but that's because they have their little places they call home. When I move them to the sump in the basement how ever their wont be any hiding spaces. Should I keep them in buckets in the sump(with holes drilled in them) or do you think they would be ok just swimming around? Corals are going into the frag tank(thank's hollback) which will be one of the 150 Rubbermaid's.

yes, the tank stayed in the same location. All I did is remove it, hang frp, paint, rewire and plumb it, then drill the tank for a closed loop and reinstall it. I did however just find out there is a huge difference in salinity testers. I just got a new one at the frag swap, compared it to the old one that was reading 1.023 and the new one is at 1.032. huge scary difference. This could be what happened to my fish. If I was keeping them at over 1.this would stress them for sure.

mark do you mean a refractometer or a plastic hydrometer or the glass style? i have two plastic ones reading opposing ends of the scale.

Caveman,

Caveman,

I have done the following tank moves:
29 - 55
55 - 75
75 - 240
Recently, I moved a 90 gal from WV and the water temp got into the 60's (heat packs did not work) and lost no fish. The only fish I ever lost from transferring was an algae blenny that decided to hide in the rock (the rock was out of water for a day or so and started to smell). Just be careful and keep kish in their own dark containers (dark = less stress) and watch the temp; they will be fine.

Joe,
Sorry to hear about your two fish. I will tell you that my hydrometer was reading .5 higher than the refractometer I bought. That's a big difference. Buying a refractometer was the best money I've spent in this hobby I think.

I got mine on ebay. I will try to find the link and pm it to you.
Linictus was actually the thread starter on the refractometers. He might be able to give it to you faster...regardless, I will search and pm the link to you if you're interested.

I think he meant refractometer. Plastic swing style hydrometer's are worthless.:thumbdown

refractometer all the way! for ease and accuracy.
the glass hydrometers are accurate as well but a pain to use. the plastic swing arm hyrometers are pretty much only good to put under a leg of a table to make it stop wobbling.
