\ I noticed my b&w clown was dead today. He had looked fine this week. My blue hippo seems to have an awful case of ich and I am almost questioning it being something else because there are so many white dots (it is swimming fine). Anyways I inspected the clown very closly and it had no ich.

Any help?

velvet (amyloodinium ocellatum) can often appear and look similar to ich. the difference is the size of the white spots. velvet is much smaller, like a fine dusting on the fish. ich is more like large salt granuals. formaline IMO is the best treatment for velvet. you need to do this in a hospital tank, not in your main system. a tank with some PVC for hiding, a heater and an airstone will do just fine. it does not always appear external on the fish because it originates in the gills, and can kill before you see signs. if the fish seems to be breathing hard or swimming directly in front of a powerhead, it is another indicator.
