i have noticed alot of these in my tank lately. they are about the size of a a pencil tip and are alot more plentiful in the dark. are they considered a problem?

if so how is there anything that takes care of them?

thanks
bob

Does it look like either of these images of a collinista snail?

If so they sometimes can get to plague proportions but not usually, They make a great addition to the clean up crew

And if they are these I would go out of my way to get a a baggy full of them. Shoot me a pm if your willing to catch some for me!!! I'd offer a trade for some coral or something

what i have looks closest to that 3rd pic but not as brown, almost all white, and they don't seem to be as big. i will try to get a pic but my closeup skills are not that great. i may have to wait till the lights go out.

positive they are snails

I have the same thing. At night there are hundreds of them. Defently snails. I've had them for years. Never seemed to hurt anything.

definitely definitely collinista snails !

great addition to the reef, on rare occasions they have come to plague proportions but it is unlikely, great scavengers.

seriously would trade you something small for a couple of dozen of them!

no it does not look like any of those pics,

super small, like a little version of the 3rd pic that bruetes posted

The only reason I asked, is I have quite a population of very tiny white limpets that come out at night. The main difference between a limpet and a snail is that a typical snail shell is coiled and open at one end of the coil, and a limpet is completely open on the bottom. They are fairly common.

Limpets are basically a snail, with a different type of shell. If they look coiled, it's probably a snail.

iLet's not make this any more difficult than it should be. They're obviously collinista snails.

I'm just stating the obvious. And obviously, there is no way to come to any "obvious" conclusion" from those pics.

I was just throwing out the possibility that they could be limpets, which are quite common, and many, including the limpets in my tank, are very tiny and white. Without seeing them in person, or with a decent pic, there is no possible way to know for sure.

I have a crap load of those in my 150 down stairs. I think I counted 68 this morning..... Yes I am that bored. The highlight of my day is baby snail counting!!

They can't be limpets do to their shell shape. That picture is perfectly clear that they have a rounded, rolled shell.
