loud aquarium..help.

This standpipe worked great. Its sounds like its dripping a limitless but I'm going to mess with the size of the hole tomorrow. What I am dealing with now is that when I took my lighthood down to work on the overflow and then put it back up one of my halides did not fire up.. I have narrowed it down to one ballast and I pulled the fuse on it and it was blown. I took the fuse out of the other ballast and put it in the ballast that blew the fuse and it still does not work, but it did not blow the new fuse. The ballast is an icecap 250 Watt hqi ballast.. has anyone had this problem with this ballast. The damn thing is only 2 monthes old...

You will have to allow the ballast to cool, as well as the bulb before it will re fire.

Wait 10 minutes and retry

That sucks! Did you possibly knock the bulb loose? Can you plug that ballast into the other light to see if it fires? Then you would know if it was the ballast or the bulb.

Oh dang. And you double checked the cord is plugged in all the way? Did it get wet while you were working on it?

Definitely did not get wet. Just checked it with a volt meter at the fuse, 122 volts in. 0 volts out. I give up ... can't afford this hobby.

Will any light ballast work? I just sold a set of T5 lights on CL w/ Ballast. Bet you could find something like that for cheap.

It has to be a 250 Watt metal halide ballast. I had an old odyssea ballast I wired in later night.. it works but takes a long time to fire the bulb.. also it must put out a different wattage because the lamp is bluer than the other. I'm just going to sell all the light stuff and buy a 6 bulb T5 setup. Less cords..less power usage.. wont have to use fans. Can I keep a clam under t5 if he is pretty high in the water column?

I am glad you figured out a plan!

Yes you can keep a clam under T5. I have seen some on the bottom of tanks with T5's.

If you have voltage before the fuse and none after, why not replace the fuse? Sorry if this was mentioned before.

Chad

unless the tank is really deep, a good 6 bulb fixture will be just fine for a clam mid-level, if not on the sand. T5 = MH if the T5 fixture is a good one. ATI is the best, TEK is probably next, then there are others probably at or just under the quality of Tek fixtures. I used a 6 bulb Tek over a 40 breeder and it was more than enough light.

The fuse Is good chaderic. I checked both sides of the fuse for voltage.. something inside it is cooked. I can't work on anything inside it because they filled it with about 4 pounds of epoxy lol. I'm getting a 6 bulb t5 Hood. I'm going to get like 2 ATI actinics 2 ATI purple plus and 2 12k bulbs and see how that works. The tank is pretty shallow, it just a 72 and has a shallow sb. I keep reading online that anemones and clams and some corals need MH to grow, but then I go to LFS and they all have them under T5s or LEDs hanging 3 feet above the tank.

Wow ghellin I was not aware they grew that's amazing. I really want to get a small maxima. What do you feed them like micro-vert or something? And how often?
