Loud Tunze 6105 --> New Model

Roger,

My 1.5 month old Tunze 6105 is making a very loud noise when it starts up. It sounds like the propeller is hitting something. I have this pump anti-synced with another 6105. One pump is on full blast for 30 seconds while the other is off. The other pump turns on for 30 seconds while the other is off. This cycle continues indefinitely.

This noise just started and is very annoying. I disassembled the unit and all looks good. The propeller spins freely and nothing is blocking it. The propeller shows no signs of wear so it doesn't appear to be hitting anything. Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention the clicking is happening about 20% of the time during the startup portion of the cycle. This unit had been perfectly quiet using this cycle for the first 1.5 months. From reading on this board, I have assumed it is OK to run these pumps off and on like I'm doing w/o potential harm to the pumps?

I can only think of two possible culprits:

The disk 3005.740 is damaged or partially missing. If the black disk the drive unit rides on is missing, worn or fused to the magnet, the rubbing on the rubber shock absorbing portion would make a sort of screeching noise. I would look in the pump with a pen light it would be at the base of the shaft. You should see a black plastic disk with a slot inside a dark blue rubber cup.

The pump has some debris or calcium deposits inside. Fine sand trapped between the shaft and drive unit or the shaft and disk can cause this as would calcium deposits, which build up much faster in off and on cycles. It is unusual for them to build up in 1.5 months but not impossible, especially if the Ca, KH or pH is high or was at some point or a precipitation has occurred during that time.

Thanks. Do you happen to have an update exploded view of the impeller assembly for the new model? My impeller removes from the shaft and nothing appears to hold it on except for the magnetic field.

That is correct, but this piece should remain at the base of the shaft in the pump-

The black disk should be inside the blue cup, calcium can fuse it to the base of the magnet and sand can grind it down so it is recessed in the blue cup and the magnet is rubbing on the cup instead of the disk. I would use a small flashlight and look inside and make sure the shaft is free of any build up of calcium, a vinegar soak would solve that.
