Low-light Anemone???

Are there any nems that will tolerate lower light levels?? I have 2.5 wpg right now!

None that host clownfish. They are photosynthetic and need high light levels.

Watts per gallon doesn't really work --- too many variables.

What size tank, and what lights do you have?

Nope, I don't see any hosting anemone working long term.

In the past I kept BTAs in a 75 (( 4 foot long )) with 6*65 PC (( all 50/50 )), but they did look better after I switched to MHs.

i have an anemone with 72watt CF's. I say go for it. Mine is real healthy and hasnt moved the day i got it. Just put it real high up and feed it a lot.

I am going to have to disagree. You have had yours for about a month now? Given the lifespan of anemones that is just a fraction of time. And from the few pictures I have seen of yours, it looks like it is stretching out for more light.

IMO, should try to give an anemone an environment where it will thrive, and not just survive.

What if I put a 150w clamp-on halide on one side? Would the anemone stay on that side?

I have a Oceanic Bio Cube with the stock PC lights in it and have a Rose BTA that is doing awesome, i think alot more has to do with water quality!!!!

I do so agree with Todd on this.I woul rather leave the anemone in the wild if you cant give it the right conditions.

With the addition of the clamp on 150 watt MH you should be fine. Just locate the anemone under the light. If you have rockwork that goes up near the bulbs, you can get by with your current lighting scheme. The distance of the anemone from the bulbs is more important than the watts per gallon. A BTA could be fine within say 12 to 15 inches of your current pc system. I would suggest all daylight bulbs to maximize PAR. Also, the age of the bulbs is a factor to consider. Opinions vary, but most agree that you should change the bulbs if over 10 months or so.

If you're considering other species of anemones, Epicystis crucifer is a nice hardy anemone that isn't as light-demanding as the host anemones.

Thanks again guys/gals. I think I'll wait until I am settled with the proper lighting and my clowns will have to be clowns without a host.
