Lowering Alk

Hi all,

I'm experiencing burnt tip on a few SPS.
I suspect it's from running ULNS.
Been using TM Bio Actiff Salt and NP pellets for last few months

I dose two part using dosing pumps.
Alk currently around 8.70 Lamotte.

I'd like to get it below 8.00

Should I shut down alk dosing pump and let it come down
or should I back off the amount I'm dosing by 20% a day until I get to
desired level?

Thanks

Personally, I'd cut it completely off until it is at your desired level, especially if you are seeing negative effects.

I agree. I'd stop dosing for a day or so, but watch the alkalinity carefully. Some tanks will drop 2-3 dKH per day.

I have been running the same set-up as you for about eight months now, and to get my ALK down to 7.5dkh I used Alca-Balance it lowers your ALK to the desire level. To keep it their I use the ECO bailing method which has thus fare proven to be successful.

The Alka-Balance contains some sulfuric acid, which will help lower dKH. Muriatic acid will do the same, although overdosing is easy. For this amount of change, a day without a reactor should be enough.

Jonathan,

Alk came down to 7.4 from 8.7 within 36 hours.
I restarted dosing pump.
While @ 8.7 I was dosing approximately 68ml daily.

In order to keep the level in the 7.5 range, what % should I back off
the 68 ml?

Thanks
Mark

That's very hard to predict. There's a lot of factors. I'd just back off 10% or so, and watch the alkalinity carefully.
