I agree, Im starting to get fed up with every coral that hits our shores having to have a "name". Its cool for the LE (mother colony farmed and lineage corals) but the Hype over names has become excessive I think. There are likely infinite color morphs of chalices, ect. in the ocean and it just becomes too much to keep track of names for every one. The truly exceptional corals should be held and aquacultured by aquarists to increase the availablity of said specimen. I dont go around calling my black cat a "dark knight" special edition, its a black cat. Sorry I just had to rant, I apologize if I was out of line.
BAHAHAHA This is to funny, I totally agree though. Names are nice fora few items, but when you have more out there then anyone can remember so you have to build a massive database to hold them with pictures. Its a little ridiculous.

Do the $300 an eye chalices sell? Ive seen tons for sale but do not know if anyone actually buys them. Acans have come wayyyyy down in price. My LFS can't even get rid of decent sized frags on their 3 for $30 rack. Aussie Scolys were a big hit for a while but I see their prices creeping down lately as well. Maybe we will see an infusion of more nice euphyllia or brains. I am a huge LPS fan and miss all the Indo scolys and cool favias that I used to see in the 90s.

That's still pretty bad when a whole colony used to go for around $40. They used to be the corals that everyone passed up to go for that neon green Trachyphyllia, lol.

I looked at one vendors Chalice page: 87 Chalices, if you bought a 1 eye frag of each Chalice on the page $28,632,,, but I am sure he would throw in the shipping for free. You know things have gotten out of hand when even the high end collectors have to have group buys to get some of these Chalices.
And show me a chalice that is so amazing my tank can not live without it. I have three small chailes, not looking to get any more. Plus, mine were all under $15.

funny to see people getting bent over for these chalices. Many of them do not look like anything special and have ridiculous price tags. I think too many clowns have got caught up in all this naming foolishness. "I have this moderately attractive coral, I think i'll give it some BS name, call it rare, and rip off some morons"....this seems to be happening often

What ever happen to favias? Everyone was crazy about them. I still love the babys breath and raptors peace favia. Oh and the Phil's lil princess favia. My 3 favs. You can get those dirt cheap now days.
Acans and chalices have been popular since I've been in the hobby for 8 years now. I don't think they're going anywhere. Aussie acans basically killed all the demand for indo and "non indo" acans a few years ago.
Thing is people want what everyone else wants so of course it's going to be expensive. There are a lot of really nice corals out there that you can get for really great prices.

Of course they do. That's why they're priced that way. Basic economics will tell you that the public dictates the prices. Vendors can come out with a $300 per eye chalice and if not one single person buys it. The vendor will have to adjust his price accordingly. If someone pays $300 then that becomes the baseline.
Over priced is all relative. A dentist who makes $250k a year, won't think $300 frag is too expensive. But a sales guy making $45k a year may think so. Don't forget the super hardcore hobbyist who lives reefing and goes to LFS multiple times a week and is on RC everyday, $300 frag may be normal, but he won't spend $50 on a dress shirt. :lol:

I really don't like to get involved in these types of threads cause the hobby has so many good people in all different income classes and it's a real bummer that some people are not able to enjoy some corals cause they are so expensive. I myself have had to walk away from many corals cause it was too expensive. Although I am one of those hobbyist who will splurge and buy a coral that are expensive, but I try to choose them wisely.
Example, Fungia's. Remember orange ones were crazy expensive a few years ago? Well I never had one. Always, though fungia's were cool, but I never wanted to pay that much for one. Well I managed to avoid them for years. It wasn't until recently I went to one of my LFS. I was ready to pull the trigger and buy something nice since I've been saving up. I saw the most unique fungia ever. It was priced at $200. To me, yes it was too expensive. But it was a perfect storm for me. One, I don't have a fungia. Two, I had the money. Three, I've never seen one like it. Four, I was shopping for a coral. So yeah, I bought it, but it was a unique situation for me. One that I'm in maybe once a year. Sadly the fungia died on me.
