LPS with Leathers

Hi Everyone,

I have started researching for my new tank (95 Gallon, 83 lbs of live rock, MH 250 Watt Lighting). I have already read so many conflicting reports about keeping leathers with LPS (like torch coral and bubble coral). Is it true that you can one or the other but not both types together because the leather secretes toxins which will kill off LPS corals?

My big problem is I love LPS but I already have a Leather (which is a bit poorly and might not survive the move into the new tank); but even if it doesn't I would like to get another one as I really like them too......

Can anyone give me any information here?

Thanks
Fiona

I kept leathers with LPS corals for years without any problems. I didn't even use any carbon, just weekly water changes.

I have a BIG leather in my tank with a frogspawn and a candycane . As a matter of fact my kenya tree is right beside my candycane . Everything is fine and dandy .

"Leathers practice chemical warfare, since stinging
polyps (aggressive defense) or a hard skeleton
(passive defense) are not available options.
They emit chemicals toxic to potential threats,
like other corals trying to horn in on their
turf, so it is important to not let them touch,
or even be too near other corals. Usually this
is a few inches on either side of the fully
extended, opened up animal. Don't be fooled
by their shrunk up size, which sometimes they
do, appearing to be dying off. Then they often
shed an outer layer of "skin," followed by
a growth period after which it is larger than
before, when you thought it was dying. Some of
these chemicals are believed to have or hold
potential for being anti-carcinogens - that is
they might be cures for cancer.
Research is currently underway into
this possibility."

I had a piece of Sinularia which are similar to "leathers" and my Acans next to it didn't fair too well. Out went the Sinularia.....

it all depends on the flow , how close .i had a green brain that was shriling up becase it was down fow of the leather moved it it sharted to recover .also i had a pipe organ and a toadstool with candy canes in between they were all about 2 inches apart . thet were killing the candycanes i am not sure but they were battling each other pipe organ and toadstool and the candycanes were in the crossfire. any info would be helpfull.

I once had a display with Elegance corals and the really bright green GSP. Made for a pretty cool display, especially under actinics. They got along fine most of the time. I had a large fuge with caulerpa that crashed several times, turning the water milky. When this happened, the tentacles of the Elegance corals that were closest to the GSP, would withdraw. I assume there was something about the caulerpa crash that irritated the GSP causing it to discharge defensive chemicals, that irritated the Elegance.

It's been proven that we can keep stony and soft corals together under the right conditions with no NOTICABLE problems. We never know when soft corals are going to get ticked off and start discharging nasty chemicals though.
