I was an original tennant. I remember a thunderstorm the night our offices moved there to the 34th floor. As a junior young guy I drew the chore of coordinating the move. I was alone waiting for the movers. The Merill Lynch building hadn't been built yet so there was a phemomenal view of the storm and the harbor from our office space.
When the Towers first opened in the early 70s,there was an excess of commercial space in NYC. So, then Gov Rocklefeller or maybe it was Wilson, decided the state of NY would rent substantial space there and bring its operations together from across the city. I was a trainer at the NYS Labor Staff Academy ; teaching Employmnent Interviewers, Claims examiners , OSHA inspectors, Workers comp board judges and others who worked for the NY state Dept of labor. We also taught college credit courses under the umbrella of the Empire State College in an efffort to enable clerical staff to move on to professional positions in teh Dept which required a degree. There were actually jobs to fill in those days.
It was a cool job with some great mentors and friends. I got to learn a alot and teach management and supervison too.I had a lot of fun using the then new black and white video cameras and creating ways to use them for interactive training .Even took a course at Pace college on them. You'd never know it from my lack of photo skills today
I moved on from there to the Dept of Transportation as a Personnel Officer after about 6 years.
After the Merrill Lynch buiding was built , it ruined the view; but my wife worked there and we would get together for lunch. That building went down too. We both knew lots of people in those buildings.
Monticello is in Sullivan, right? It's been a while so my geography is a bit blurry.. When my Dad would visit us in Orange county ,we would drive up to the raceway. He loved it.
