I used to think that I would be the exception to the rule and that mixing anemones would be fine in my tank. I am now a frim believer that that is not a good idea after my latest disappointment. I have a large magnifica that has been in my 180 gal tank for the last year. I tried adding a gigantea about six months ago but it never really thrived and has slowly withered away. I just chalked this up to it not being a healthy specimen from the start since it was very bleached when I got it.
I finally found a very healthy gigantea that had been in a LFS show tank for about six months and the owner decided to part with it. It appeared that it was doing very well in my tank for about 10 days and I was about to post pictures of it when it quickly started to decline. In about 4 days it went from a very beautiful anemone to dead. I am convinced that the H. magnifica must release something that affects other anemones. I did run carbon and changed it every 3 days since the addition of the new anemone. Needless to say that it was a very tough lesson to learn.
That is a very sad familiar story. Sounds like you and I both made the same mistake. Sorry to hear about your trouble.
I do have one small silver lining to my tale of woe. I discovered when I got home last night that two of my three rose anenomes split. Maybe the stress of the last two weeks triggered it. I now have 5 in my tank!! Not sure how I will be able to get them off my liverock but I sure don't need 5 of them.
