phil your basically going to be laminating 2 layers of 3/4" plywood together and then screw that to your old stand. Wifes telling me to come eat so I'll brb to finish explaining

alright heres your buy list
1: 4x8 sheet of plywood (I'd personally use a finished one side plywood)
2: screws, you'll need 2 lengths of a coarse thread wood screw the first size will be 1" or 1 1/4" for screwing the 2 pieces of plywood together the second length will have to be long enough to penetrate through your old stand and go into at least 1 layer of the plywood
3: paint or stain to seal the wood and protect it from moisture ( if you use paint I'd go with walmarts spray paint it's like $.97 a can last time I bought some)
4: construction adhesive ( this is sort of optional will explain later)

there is that second hand store at the pubic market that has tons of used cabinets and furniture dirt cheap, u might get lucky

in the diagram I had you cutting the plywood into 2 ft by 4 ft pieces double check the depth of your tank front to back and go from there you could add a little so you could have a lip around the tank if you wanted your going to have more than enough plywood for what your doing. Take your time and mark it all out on the plywood b4 you make any cuts and remember that the saw will remove some material so your going to have to space the pieces a little how much depends on what kind of saw blade your going to be useing. after you get it all marked out and your happy with the way it looks make your cuts. I'd sand the edges down a little just to make it look pretty but I'm sorta ocd like that. Now take the 2 pieces you cut for the top and find what side your going to use for the top surface (if your useing the finished one side the pre-finished side will be smooth while the other side will be fairly rough) If you've opted to use construction adhesive you'll apply that to the bottom(non finished side) several small beads (lines) will be fine. now put the 2 pieces together and even the edges. Run screws in from the bottom to hold the pieces together until the adhesive dries. Running the screw in from the bottom will make them unseen on the final product just be carefull not to run them to deep as you don't want them poking through the top. After that is all done make sure no adhesive oozed out the sides if some did clean it up b4 it dries. Now your ready to paint or stain the top that you just built. If your wanting to you could refinish the old stand now but thats up to you. After the finish has dried and your happy with how it looks center it on top of the old stand make sure its centered so that the load of the new tank will be supported evenly on the stand. After you have it centered run screws from the bottom (inside) of the stand into the plywood once again makeing sure that you don't go to deep. you could use some adhesive in between the new top and the stand if you wanted to. As you screw the top to the stand make sure the screws aren't pushing the top up leaving a space between the old stand and new top. If you notice this happening back the screw out and redrive it, this normally pulls the 2 pieces tight. A few clamps would also help at this point but it isn't required. Whala new stand. If you have any ?'s just pm or call me. It also wouldn't hurt to add some bracing to the back of the stand as well. Just cut a 4-6" wide strip the length of the stand and screw it to the back of the stand a few inches below the bottom of the top and another a few inches off the floor.
