THE OLD 90

Well I am relatively new to RC, but I have been on here everyday since sometime in April 2007... I am from Laurel, Ms which is about 60 miles north of the Gulf Coast of Mexico... I have had a saltwater tank since around '02 or '03 (hard to remember)... My first tank was a 55 gallon fish only that I got from my father in law... He had started the tank sometime around '01, and I helped him along the way... He realized that I loved it, and always called me over to help him on maintenance, and to ask me questions since he knew I had been reading much more than he had... later that year he had an Aortic Aneurism (? spelling) , and had bypasses, and a valve repair... needless to say, he could not take care of the thing anymore, and I assumed full responsibility of it... So that year when X-mas came around, he gave me everything he had accumulated... I took care of it in it's new home for another year or so, until the next X-mas... My wife and I were in the LFS buying some stuff, and she saw a 90 gallon that she just loved... so that was my X-mas present... This was for X-mas 2004, and I went and picked it up right after New Year's '05... My plan was to start a reef tank with it. -------------------->

I had been reading for some 2 years or so about keeping a reef tank, and considered myself a real amature... Keep in mind that I thought I was an amature even before I had any experience keeping a reef whatsoever, but still I had absorbed quite a bit of knowledge on the subject... So anyway, I set up the tank, and transferred the 55 into it... I had purchased a minimal amount of Fiji live rock (which I still hate to this day) when I picked up the new 90G... If I remember right my wife was having some company over a few days after it was all transferred from the 55 to the 90, so she wanted it to look good... I complied and this is what it looked like at that point (early 2005)

So there it is!!! My new 90 gallon great hope... Notice that I had some huge damsels in there... they were in the 55 and I had to transfer them so that they did not die... Also you see the few pieces of dreadful Fiji Live Rock... the rest of it was just dead rock that came out of the 55 FO... the anemones were put in there to make it look PRETTY, as my wife requested... they did very well for a while (soon you will know why they did not do well)... Also I had decided that I could not fit a sump, so I put 3 Fluval 404 canister filters w/ only carbon in them, and 2 Aquaclear power heads... This was to be my circulation, and to be honest it would have been sufficient for the corals that I planned to keep, although the power heads were ugly... So the company my wife was having came, and then the planned live rock order took place... I knew that I would need time to get the rock in there, and that it would probably be a mess, so I waited till no one was coming over... I caught the damsels and took them to the LFS for credit (the one pictured on the far right is still there today in the 300 gallon just as you walk in the door)... I ordered live rock from TBS... It arrived the next day, and I put it in... I was very pleased with it, and here is a picture of the tank at that point

So I had it set up, and had even put a few corals in there... I thought it was coming along nicely, and wanted to give it some time to establish, and grow corraline, etc... so I just left it alone except for maintenance, and watched as it just turned into a beautiful tank... THIS MAY BE BORING MOST OF YOU, BUT STAY WITH ME

THEN DISASTER STRUCK... I STRESS THE WORD DISASTER

HURRICANE KATRINA

I know what some people may think when I say this was a disaster for the tank... How was it a disaster for you? You dont live on the coast or New Orleans... Just to give you an example of the devistation... There were 180 something counties in MS affected by Katrina... Obviously the top 3 were coastal counties, but at #4 was Jones County, MS... This is the county that we live in... When the Cane got to Laurel it was still a category 3 w/ 120 mile per hour winds... It absolutely was the worst thing I had ever seen in my life (29 years at the time)... We were without power for a total of 20 days... I purchased an 8000 watt generator when I realized the thing was going to hit the coast as a CAT 5... Even though it was a pretty good generator... I could only run the tank maybe 2 hours a day, and I tried to keep a heater running when needed... So the power came back on, and so did the tank... I was happy that I had only lost a shrimp, and 1 wrasse... I thought (this is great), but over time the thing just sort of got worse and worse... all the corraline slowly went away and my GSP faded also.

I know this post is getting really long, so here we are today... We have gotten back to a normal life... the tank also had to survive a move... We moved into a new house in Jan of this year... I set it up and have pretty much only maintained it as we have been getting everything else in order... I just put the rocks in there until I can get to them and aquascape... So here is a current picture of it, and then I will end this post.

SO THE TITLE OF THE THREAD IS LUKINRATS OLD AND NEW 90... THIS CONCLUDES THE OLD PART, AND ALL POST FROM HERE FORWARD WILL BE THE NEW 90, AND ALL MY PLANS ETC. WHILE I FINALLY BUILD MY REEF... I HOPE TO MAKE A RECORD OF IT, AND GET SOME HELP FROM ALL THE WONDERFUL KNOWLEDGE HERE ON RC

LATER :)

Wow, that's quite a story. Sorry for all your troubles. I'm sure your new tank will be awesome. Can't wait for updates. :)

Lukinrats Old and New 90 gallon tank!

THE NEW 90

While sitting at work one day, and thinking what I should do about starting my reef again :) ... I decided the first thing I needed was a Sump... I quickly ended up at Melev's site... What a great place!!! I really learned a lot about all kinds of things not even related to sumps, and it even led me to Reef Central.

The first thing I did was sponsor RC, and then started studying... while I was trying to decide what to go with for a sump, I realized that I would need to pick out a skimmer, and then design a sump... This is when I first turned to the RC members for info... I started a thread to hopefully help me make an informed decision... I had been reading for a week or more, and had yet to find anything very useful... The information on RC about skimmers is abundant, but spread out... I wanted info on all skimmers, and I wanted it all in one thread... This helped me out tremendously, and I think it is a good one for anyone who might be in the market for a new skimmer... Also I would look Here to see how some people think they stack up

Now I have decided on a skimmer, and when I finally get it... Everybody will see whether or not my threads actually helped me.

The next thing that I did to get the ball rolling was to order an Ro/Di filter... I had always used distilled water from Wal-Mart... So I decided to finally bite the bullet... So far I am very very happy with it... I purchased mine on Melev's site

Currently I am planning my sump out... Melev has agreed to build it for me, and I know that I am probably a PIHA, but he is really a great guy... So he does not let me know it if I am.

Here are a couple of pictures of the stand to show what I have to work with... Keep in mind that behind the wall the tank is on... is the kitchen, and I have not basement... Everything has to be contained right in the stand, or on the back of the tank

Stand

Stand w/ doors open

So right now I have decided this much... I am going to do away with the drawers... I plan on just taking the face off of them, and glueing them to the top of the doors... Then I will remove the trim in between the top of the door, and bottom of the drawer facings... this will give me an extra 5-6" of height when accessing the sump

One last picture to show what my plans are currently for the design.

Now I hope that all of this makes sense... I am trying to give everyone a pretty good understanding of what I am going to be working with...Also I want Melev to be able to come to this thread when he starts on the sump, so he will know what I am wanting to do.

So for now I will leave it to you guys to make any suggestions... I have some more things to show... I also have some more ideas about how I want to do things, but that will have to wait till I get home... I dont have any pictures for representation right now

Just so everyone knows... Melev has become my Reef Mentor... I don't think he knows, so shhhhhhhhhh!

Got it. Now I understand that floating corner. You may need to support it once it is installed.

Did you understand about the images? I hope that helped.

Ya I thought about the support, and I will be able to do that without a problem... I know that is really getting complicated, but unless you can think of anything, that is the only way I see to go... I will take some pictures of the the stand when I get home... I cleared everything out of the bottom, except for 1 of the canisters... You can see a whole lot more now... I even realized that the whole front of it comes off... which is another reason I am going to take it down to install the sump (among other things).

I did understand about the pictures, and I already kind of figured that was what you were doing... i guess I just hoped differently because I want to be able to put pictures like that in my posts.

It kind of looks like a combination of things to me. Sorry I can't be more specific from that one picture.

Ya... I have seen some strange stuff pop up since the thing went 20 days without lights... I think some of it is stuff that normally would not be seen... I mean normal people would not have aquarium lights off for that amount of time... I think I have taken most of it out... I thought I had some diatoms because of all the little bubbles, but I just recently realized that they were all coming from my CSS ... I have the outlet hose just stuck off into the display rather than fool with that bubble diffuser crap... It has pretty much stopped making bubbles now, and I have not seen any bubbles in the display anymore.

Melev... Just wanted to make sure you saw that part of the post

This is also something that I want to do after I get my sump installed... Although it will be on a little bit larger scale because I want more flow than what a couple of maxi jets put out... I want to put like a mag or something in that little box... with a oceans motions on top of it... this will lift the pump up almost to the top of the display, allowing there to be minimal plumbing up to the manifold... I have not decided yet, but I may not even have to put a prime line used to start it up for the first time... I would only put a short suction down in the display.

Whada yall think?

Yep, I saw it.

Btw, let me ask you this about that funny spot in the back right corner. I know you want the notched section. Would there be any value to having the back panel come all the way down to the floor to give it a 'leg to stand on' sort-of-thing?

Of course... I thought about it, but I did not want to get too drastic on you... I figured what I was proposing was probably enough of a hassle.. LOL

I think this is a pretty good representation of how my skimmer will be built... After all of the information that I got from RC users on my thread, I decided to go with an ORCA Custom skimmer... #1 I could not decide on one because there were several that had features I was looking for... #2 I talked to Sean over at ORCA and he is very very helpful... #3 because DAS only makes a dual recirculation skimmer that is 30" tall, and the max I can accomodate is like 26.5"... So when I finally decided what all I wanted I called Sean to make sure it would work out... What we decided at the time was the following:

-6" Reaction chamber
-3.5" neck
-25" tall
-2-aquabee needle wheel pumps mounted deltec style (1 on each side)
-1" outlet plumbing w/ gate valve
-venturi lines plumbed into collection cup
-john guest fitting on collection cup for drain

Note: ( I think there maybe more room in the sump than originally planned, so I may change the size of the body, but I am not sure yet)

Although I have no idea what the final product will look like... I believe it will be similar to the picture above... Only it will have 2 pumps, and maybe some other small differences... I might add that the difference in cost in nothing substantial... So if after reading all the threads on RC, including mine, You cant decide on one... The custom route through ORCA might be the best option I have found

I wanted to include this information in this thread so that all the people that helped toward my choice would know what I decided on... I will def. put pictures, etc. up after I get so that the other people that were reading my threads to obtain info for the same reason as me, can see what direction it pointed me in... I feel like everyone would be mad if I did not share my decisions

Anyway just some more ramblings about my progress

Be sure to find out the exact footprint of your skimmer with pump(s) to make sure it will fit into your sump plans.

Right now the footprint will be 9.5", or go ahead and say 10" x 15"... So it will work... I am checking to see if there would be any reason to make the reaction chamber larger than 6" OD... so if anything it would end up being like 12 x 15" ... I think that will work in the space I have figured
