LumenBright reflectors - What is the difference between them?

What is the different between theese lumenBright reflectors?

I need the "large" model, but it seems to be availible in different types.

And I would like to buy a LB reflector to use with E40 socket and for my 400 watt MH bulb.

1) Lumen Bright 3 DE Metal Halide Reflector

2) Lumen Bright 3 Metal Halide Reflector (Large)

3) Lumen Bright 3 SE Metal Halide Reflector(Large)

I can see that number 3 is black and got air ventilation holes. That seems quite good, but has number 2 that feature also, or what? Which ons is the best?

They are visible at this link:

DE = dubble ended, but what is the diffent between number 2 and 3?

Yes the single Mongule Version would be "SE" or Single Ended.

The difference is the actual housing the light is in. The 3) Lumen Bright 3 SE Metal Halide Reflector(Large) is an actual Fixture with finished case.

This one 2) Lumen Bright 3 Metal Halide Reflector (Large) is a retrofit, and requires a canopy or other device for it to be installed in.

1) Lumen Bright 3 DE Metal Halide Reflector

2) Lumen Bright 3 Metal Halide Reflector (Large)

3) Lumen Bright 3 SE Metal Halide Reflector(Large)

1. Double ended Bulbs only, and its really the mini reflector size 16"
2. Single ended bulbs only, and its 20"
3. There is a pendant style, which is the same size as #2 above, but it has a protective glass.

There is also a new mini wide out, this is also 16" but the reflector facets are broader, and thus, the light is more spread out.

Is the 3) a "pendant style" more effective against heat than number 2 ?

I have a large DIY canopy from the tank to the celling, so there are plenty of space for high mounting reflectors. But should I go with 2) og 3) ?

And finally, can I use a E40 socket in 2) for these big bulbs with build in UV protection glass ?

I dont think its measurable. I had double ended pendants with the glass shield and now i have the SE reflectors with no glass and temp has not changed. Nor is the fans running more.

What are the dimensions of your tank? What corals are you keeping?? Any clams or LPS in the sand??

My tank dimensions is:

Length: 64" (160 cm.)
Depth/width: 32" (80 cm.)
Higth: 28"

total volumen: 230 g. (approx 900 litre)

I am keeping acroporas, montiporas, sacrophytons, ricordias - but in total I only got 15-20 corals at the moment, so it looks rather empty. After the light upgrade i would like to buy more corals.

the sand is 0,5 to 1,5 mm. diameter, and there is plenty of room at the bottom.

At the moment i only go a single 400 watt MH (single ended), and a poor reflector, so am thinking about getting two LumenBright reflectors with 400 watt Single Ended bubls.

Have you any suggestions / comments concerning what I should buy?

You should run 400 watts for 32" deep. If it was my choice i would go with (2) LumenBright Mini Wide reflectors.

Here is the thread (this is really long, but has all the info you will ever need on these bad boys).

Pendants are nice because the glass is easier to wipe clean. I got just the reflectors, but if i had to do it again, i would spend the extra money and get the pendants.

I dont think that #3 with the Black covering comes with the glass covering for the bulb at least in the single ended version. I believe they only use the glass in the double ended version to block UV rays that the DE bulbs emit. I agree that you should run the 400 watt with a tank as deep as yours and I would go with 3 of them the coverage you are going to get with these reflectors is a bout a 2x2 spread. You may be able to get a better spread with a different reflectors and get away with only having 2 . Also I would only with the black finished ones if they are going to be seen outside the canopy. If they are going to be in the canopy I would not even bother going with the black finish ones.

The SE is offered with a protective glass. Read the first line of this link.

CORALVUE LUMEN BRIGHT FINISHED SE PENDANT [LBP-MINI]
The New Lumen Bright Finished Pendant from CoralVue has a sleek black powder coated finish with a protective glass shield.

I agree with an411 that (3) lights would be better than (2), but you could make two work, specially if the rockwork is not touching the glass. They are designed for a 2x2 spread, but i get spill over with just the minis, and if you go with the wide minis you should be okay with good PAR numbers.[

But isn't the protection glass getting dirty over time and prevent the light = reduce the PAR ?

I think we will go with two lumenbrights. Arent the wide mini's to small compared to the lumenbright large reflectors at 19 x 19"?

Which bubl's would you recommend to give a nice natural look and keep the PAR value high? We like the crispy little blue look and as many others we don't like a yellow light (eg 5600 kelvin), but the since it is 2 x 400 watt, we are thinking of add some blue T5's, start them in the morning, let the MH's turn on at the evening an turn the hole system off at midnight. What are your opinion, what should I buy when it comes to bulbs ("colors", kelvin) to keep PAR high with the nicest look?

Yes the glass will get dirty, but its much easier to clean then the whole reflector and bulb. The whole point to these new reflectors is to push the light down into the tank. You can use either one, I would go with the mini wides, but thats me. If you want to use the large, i dont see any issues. You might want to hop over to the Reef Specialty forum and ask Mike (AcroporaNut) or Jeremy which might work better for your setup. They are really directing traffic, and i have heard no complaints yet. Good luck

I will try to ask them regard setup configurations.

thank you so much for the helps all af you. The "Reef Specialty forum" is it here at Reef Central?

Interesting when I first got mine they did not have the glass on the SE. I wonder what purpose this serves? Besides maybe to help keep reflector clean. But with these having to be hung pretty high i never have an issue with much salt spray on the reflectors themselves. I always thought that the glass was for UV rays that the DE emit and that single ended did not need them
