LUNATIC FRINGE-Duel 500g tanks, 1600g total

I like the idea of having the TV in the middle, but have you thought about the glare this might cause? Might be hard to appreciate all 1080 pixels with bright LEDs shining at you.

Just a thought.....

I was thinking the same. One solution might be blackout blinds on a remote. They could be lowered when the TV is being used.

I'll be following this thread with great interest. Only problem I see so far is the "Gold" and "Garnet". Go Gators! :lmao:

Tagging Along.. What are you doing about Ventilation?

If I have learned one thing about where I live it is the damage that moisture can cause. I will not have a problem with the sump since the tank will be drained straight to the first floor and I will have a mini split down there. I am going to have both hoods set up to be tight and use negative pressure to exaust both of them straight out of the hoods to an inline fan that will either go straight out the back wall or down into the fish room and then striaght out the wall. I dont want to just vent it to the fish room because it would then have to be pulled out again....

I saw 3 problems with the TV being this close to the tanks.... First, heat generated by the tv....so I am going with LED...generates next to no heat....Second, I may not be a rocket scientist but water and electronics do not mix well..... so the tops of the overflow box will be sealed and the TV will technically be sealed around it from the water ..and lastly....the tank lights causing viewing issues. I THINK this will be solved because the ends of the tank next to the TV will have wood between the tanks and the TV and thus no direct light..... I think the biggest problem for me is that my old Energy e9 speakers are going to be way too big to fit into the stand and thus my surround sound will never be the same.....I have been to a few audio/video stores trying to find book shelf speakers I like and I have yet to find something that come close. I just may build my own....I built a 6'x3'x2 Tuba Subwoofer for the our home theater and that came out great....the speakers would be way easier if I can find plans I like.

Exciting build! Are you building the entire cabinet system or just the frame?

I THINK I could build a nice cabinet as me and my handyman did all of the wood work in the home theater. However, I dont have the skill set to do really high end cabinetry. One of the largest problems I have encountered in Tampa is TERRIBLE subcontractors in all areas so I have been forced to do a lot of stuff on my own.... However, I beleive I have found a very good cabent maker....we hired him to redo some cabentery iin our bedroom His drawlings were great and he has very good vision in what we are looking for. He sent some pctures today and they look great. I am going to the shop with management (the wife) to see them Sat morning. Since the tank cabintrey is DRAMATICALLY more important than anything in the bedroom....I had him do this stuff first!

Just to forewarn you.... the waste water drains are all going to be painted Orange and Blue..... GO NOLES!

I am actually hosting a very well known exUF (and NFL) football player and his family at the FSU spring game in two weeks....his daughter wants to go to FSU....LOL.... It will kill him if she comes to FSU but it will give me great joy to rub it in with him and his wife!

Note to self: When a hammer meets a thumb... Hammer wins.

Finished the top main part of the stand: Still have to put the bottom and top on it...Details later....

Met with the cabinet guy this morning...as mentioned before subs and pros in this area are horrible. I could write a book on my experiences...HOWEVER, I THINK I have found a great cabinet guy.....the stuff for the bedroom looks great....we picked a stain and accent color and they are going to install in a couple of weeks...

I game him some rough up plans for the stand and hood and what I am looking for...He game me some cabinet books to look through which is VERY dangerous as my wife every 2 minutes screams out..."you have to come look at this....". She is looking at the books not for the stand but all the other projects she wants done.... I am also going through some RC threads on cabinets right now.....My main interest is hoods and access.

a mirror is going where the cardboard is....

Filtration room:

Because the tanks will sit on the second floor I needed to reinforce the weight of an African Elephant. So since I needed to both reinforce the trusts AND wanted to have a fish room....20% of the gym was annexed.

Next wall up with the start of electric....

Room is 19'x8' with an additional cubby hole of 3x5 in the back corner....

The tanks sit parallel to the left green wall. The floor trust run perpendicular. The far back wall you see supports two loads... The first are a set of 12" thick floor beams that run from concrete wall to concrete wall. I probably didn't need to support them but I needed to put a wall somewhere...might as well be here. I used a 2x12 top place which you can see on the roof line.... The second support is one end of the beam I installed. It is an LVL 15"d x 5.5"W beam. It is over supported by an army of 2x4 beams that are nailed, glued and lag bolted together. Lastly the tanks floor beams also have a new load bearing wall which is the wall on the right....

This is a picture of the added load bearing wall which again was not needed with the beam but I had to put a wall somewhere as a gym and fish room do not mix well. If you noticed I sistered VERTICALLY 2x6 inch lumber that is attached to the floor trust and runs from the plywood floor above down to the load bearing wall. This way I am transferring any weight directly from the floor straight to the load bearing wall.... I did this around the LVL beam also. The original floor trust were not necessarily designed to have support under so this solved the problem. I also sistered as many joists as possible everywhere I could.... Lastly, anywhere I opened the roof, I added plywood back instead of drywall. This acts almost like an I beam with the plywood on the floor and ceiling. My goal was to transfer as much weight as possible. I will use flexible caulk between the wood and drywall as they will not shift identically over time and could cause a crack after the roof is repaired and sprayed.

This is the opposite end....I have one of the 200g tanks in place as I was using it to get an idea of placement.

OK>>>>>>Need some feed back....

There are a few things I am still up in the air about....

The first is LED lights....I have glazed over the subject but need to focus more on it.... any threads or thoughts would be appreciated it...

Second. One of the tanks is going to be a mixed/sps tanks and the other FOWLR....I have been worried that I will have a mismatch of color......one side bright...the other sided with dull liverock (with some coralline) and tons of fish....

One idea is to have the coral side die off on the edge...and then try and have it pick up in symmetrics with the fish tank as though the left tank is on the reef and the right tank is part of the reef but is on the edge...almost like your are leaving the reef.... Does that make sense?

The other idea is to say forget trying to match it someway...and have the bright coral tank on one side with white sand and then put black sand in the FOWLR and have different looks....
Thoughts???

I like the idea of a transition from one area of the reef to another, like making one tank look like the reef crest with hard corals and so on, and the other look like a lagoon full of fish. Very cool concept.

I am all for LED, I run AI Vega Color units over my 60g Solana and the Chalices, LPS, and SPS love it. I like the sleek look and the energy consumption, the fact that they produce no heat, and the ability to finely tweak the spectrum.

There will inevitably be an argument over which LED to go with, but really, maxspect, radion, AI, you probably cant go wrong. Hell a bunch of kessils would do it too. I just like the AI units for cost and with the AI director coming, for adjustability and interface.

Your build looks like it will be killer, keep up the good work!

Thanks...what is your surface area and how any units do you have?

and my last post of the night is a great read on weights of tanks, floor design loads...etc....

I poured 2" of concrete around where the cabinets and tables will go. I also installed a drain at the end....I should not have an issue with things getting wet if I have a problem and it should be easy clean up like this as nothing of value will get wet if I decide to clean the floor.

It amazes me when I read some of your builds and everything is perfectly clean during the constructions...not this one....
