LUNATIC FRINGE-Duel 500g tanks, 1600g total

Nice!, does there need to be a specific amount of crushed coral or enough to pull the weight down?

There has to be 3943 pieces of crushed coral. You have to count every one and make sure that only 3943 pieces are used. OR you can just put enough in to make it sink and stay at the bottom when the top bottle is pulling against it!

As for the doser, if you know how many mls you use a day to keep your numbers where you want then I would take that number and divide it by the most doses you can do a day to keep everything stable. Example, i dose 200 mls of white vinegar a day so i do 10 mls 20 times a day. Just to give you a rough idea.

I am trying to find out how many mls a day to dose....or at least a starting point.

Red Sea Coral Pro....has great numbers...nice high alk...but I have never been able to keep alk stable...always trying to run down to 6ish.... Probably should be trying to dose 2 part instead of Kalk.....

I would. Best way to know is do a water change, test 24 hours later then test 72 hours later and see how much you used. Then find out how much you need to dose to get it to your tanks sweet spot and that's your daily dose. I use the Red Sea regular salt and that's how I kept my numbers stable. But since I have a calcium reactor I make my mixing water to equal my tank levels and then it's more steady now in my opinion.

Ok WAY over due for some updates and I have lots of them....HOWEVER..... if anyone has some great inspirational tank pics please post them here including the name and country if you know it.... I have about 20 empty picture frames and I am going to find the 20 that I love and hang them in the Sump Room.....so to start with....does anyone know whose tank this is? I think it is from Japan....

Following your build......unless I missed something, still waiting for the top of the cabinetry to be completed? Very nice build....great attention to detail.....How do you like the Hyperions? Pacific Sun LEDs are very nice and I like the increased color spectrum.....

I have a 215 gal DT with 120 gal sump, 40 gal refugium w/algae turf scrubber and 20 gal frag tank on the system. I have LED lighting as well. I purchased my LED lights early in the technology..(in late 2011). I have 3 x 180 watt Reef Tech LED fixtures.....of course the company is out of business now....thankfully the lights are working very well. Each fixture is made up of all 3watt Cree LEDs however they only contain cool white, Royal blue and blue. I feel the color spectrum is lacking. After numerous adjustments I currently run the whites at 35%, and both blues @ 85%. I tried to purchase additional custom LED fixtures with supplemental colors, (violet, cyan, deep red, amber), however in trying to obtain the individual color group control it became cost prohibitive. I ended up by recently adding 4 x 80 watt T-5's to the mix. The jury is still out on how this effects SPS coral growth.

Anyway....I look forward to seeing the cabinetry completed and new FTS w/both light fixtures over each tank.
Frank

P.S. I purchased the following T-5's for my retrofit kits: 1 x Geismann midday sun, 1 x Geismann Aquablue plus, 1 x ATI True Actinic 03 and 1 x ATI Purple Plus. I am hoping to see greater polyp extension, growth and coloration...it's only been about a week.

Thanks for dropping by.... I am having HUGE difficulties with the Pacific Sun fixtures. So far my experiences have been miserable. I was going to post my review of them but I want to see if they are going to step up and fix them as they have NEVER worked correctly in the year that I have had them. I wish I could tell you how well SPS would grow but I cant get the lights to work, stop blinking, resetting...kick into.manual overdrive every 45 seconds, etc, etc, etc....

Hood: Probably the only other area I cant get right but this is more of a design problem. Even though I purchased a 1000# actuator and extra heavy duty tracks, we cant get the hood to move up and down smoothly. It bounces. The problem is that actuators and the tracks all have to be mounted in the back. Because the hood is 40" deep....the hood bounces as it moves no matter how stiff we make the material. If the hood was only 30"ish deep I dont think it would be a problem. Also the hoods have to be very smooth up and down because there will be wood-work in the middle of the tanks over and around the tv and they obviously cant touch during operation. I really want automated hoods but so far this has been tough to figure out.

I do have some good things going on and I will try and post this weekend sometime.

Yup that's the picture but I still cant find the tank owners name.....but heck of a website, nice find. Catch me up with a call one of these days....

Here is the original picture that yours was cropped from:

It seems to belong to these folks, but I'm afraid my Japanese is limited to a few catch phrases from Clavell's "Shōgun" novel. ;)

Have you been in constant contact with Yorgos? Those lights are still under warranty and you shouldn't be having issues....you made a nice investment there and they should be making things right.
Regarding the hood.....I have an "in wall" build and although it is not the same magnitude as your setup I do have an access panel above the tank. The panel is 6 ft wide by approximately 19" long.....it was setup like cabinet doors however I have a marine spring on one side which stiffens when I open the panel and then collapses when I close it.....simple but it does the job. Sorry I can't identify the exact name of the spring, (the cabinet contractor who manufactured the panel for me thought of using this and installed it), but I can take and post a pic if you are interested.

Ed, I would love to see your hood. I have considered doing something similar using gas shocks. The lights are very heavy...then add the wood.... Im thinking of trying to anchor about 12" to the back wall, using piano hinges at that mark and than trying to come up with something that would help support the weight to move it backwards on the hinge....

Pacific Sun...yea I have had at last 25 communications with Yorgos....I am going to try and go to straight to the manufacturer as he has been far less than helpful.

I built a 2x4 surround and mounted this....they are NOT rated for wet areas but I have added some gloss paint and electrical lubricant spray all around it...they are very cheap but I love them.

Now that I have redone the sumps I need to go to an external skimmer so I am going to put the Diablo int300 up for sale soon.....sad to see her go but the new set up works better with an external like on the gold tank.

I built a small macro algae cage...painted it black to cut down on algae growth on the cage itself.... I am going to start playing with macro's and dont want the algae floating around and getting caught in pumps. Light comes on at night for 10 hours.
