You got a pretty sweet project there LunchBucket! I can relate I just purchased my first home a few years back, and just finally finished the twin 180 project. It took me a few years to save up for that project, LOL I am still working overtime to buy new equipment for the tank. Congradulations and Ill be sure to tag along on this thread.

I know what you mean about student loans; ours kicked in last month. Pretty expensive when both of us have our Masters. I'm sure you'll find a way to get the tank up though. Good luck!

Scuba - You finished the twin 180's? Did you update your thread? I haven't gotten an email notification. I've been watching for progress on that thread. Post up man :D Thanks...I'm sure it will all work out for me

crab0000 - OUCH both w/ masters. Well hopefully you are using them to your full potential. My wife did 5yr undergrad and I did 7yr total w/ BS and then MS. I'm not making what I should be w/ a Masters but I LOVE my job and basically run every aspect of it. So it's a trade off but that doesn't pay the bills. It's just hard being young and first starting out. Hope that the wife gets a new job so she gets paid more. Combined we just don't make very much yet. It will get better...and it will work out...it always does. Just hard to see that right now. Good luck w/ your tanks too.

Oh life what a fun road.

ps- forgot I need a sump for the tank. I'm gonna use a rubbermade stock tank I think

Sorry I havent posted any pics, my desk top crashed and havent loaded up the digital software on our lap top yet. When I get through this overtime barrage Ill catch up on the thread.

Lunch, I think you know the answer - everyone thus far has suggested you focus on the house for now, and the tank later, and I must agree. Trust me, owning a house has more opportunities for thinning your wallet than you can count or anticipate.

Kind of off topic, but what is the difference between the Sequence pump mentioned above and the Barracuda?

Dudester - I guess at least I have my priorities in place but still hope the tank comes about in the next yr or so.

I too would like to know the Difference between teh Barracuda and the other. They look pretty close spec wise

It is speced like the link, but it looks more like this.

I believe these pumps were handbuilt and marketed prior to the Barracudas being available, so they cost a little more. I don't think they make too many of these pumps. Compared to the Barracudas I have seen, the motor is larger, slightly more powerful, and is a touch louder than the 'cuda & Dart. Of course, I only ran it for a few minutes.

these pumps are the best and I have 6 of them 2 5800 and 4 4300. they are absolutely quiet and the only things I hear from them is the fan which is very minimal. also the baldor motors are industrial grade, very durable and long lasting. motors have to mounted correctly for them to be quiet and took me some times to figure out the problems.

Ah the baldor motor. I've heard those are outstanding motors.

cbui2 - what do you mean by the motors have to be mounted correctly to be quiet??

Don't let the woman bring you down. You bought the house. Put the tank where you want and tell her to like it. That's what I did and the woman made me add another one to balance out the room. Tell her if you set up the tank in the basement she will never see you.

 I'm getting to that point. I'm gonna wait till we are in the house an I move the furnace from the center of the basement (stupid placement) to a utility room on the edge and then rip down a wall to open up a big bedroom and make a living room. Then I'm gonna start planning out framing my fish room and there is no going back from there :D

Guys how big do you think is the smallest a fish room for a 4x4 tank could be? I don't want to take up a ton of space in the basement and I probably should think about the resale end of how I could rip it out if needed. I'm thinking of sticking the tank all the way out or 2' in and 2' out of a wall so I have a 3 sided tank. Then I can have a smaller back room as the tank won't be in the room only the back side or 2' of it.

I was thinking at least 6' wide x 4ft wide would be the smallest I could make it???

Tough call. My tank room is 13 x 13 for an 8 x 5 tank, and it is too small. Whatever you decide on, just multiply by 2. :D

You have any pics of your tank room?

I really need to make it pretty small to save room in the basement and make it not look funny IMO. I'll have a better idea once we get the house (May 31st) and I can measure and plan out stuff.

I'm gonna mock up some rooms on Google Sketch and see what they look like

I wouldnt go that small for the room. You will obviously want room that you can work in once all your equipment is in there. Maintenance and heat issues would be what id be concerned about.
I think your on the right track drawing it up, and its not hard to set out with a few string lines, the overall size of the basement, then set out the proposed size of the fish room with the tank installed to give you a true idea. Its what I would do, at least you can adjust the lines and take measurements, so you can see what is your most favourable situation/placement.

Hope this helps, and good luck with it.

Chris.

its a good place for the furance it gives balance air flow

RGibson - True true but is a PITA. How many houses actually have them in the middle? It breaks up the basement too much so I'll have some buddys that worked for a furnace place move it after we move in. Adding the living room will add more resale value and of course then I can have a tank room :D

I want to drill a hole in the block or install a small window so I can get some fresh air in that room too.
