Lyle's 150H in-wall build (with pics)

I got the last of my corals home today from the office. I'm officially left with nothing but shrooms and palys at work. Not sure what I'm going to do with that tank at this point. The corals look good though and as soon as they're clean and healthy I'll move them into the DT.

The mili in the DT is doing REALLY well now too. The piece I've been waiting for to green up again is finally getting real green and the polyp extension is crazy. It was never this good in my nano!

I dipped that big mili I brought home and it released a bunch of mucous after I put it in QT. the tank is hazy and there are strings of it all over everybody. Zoas are all closed up. This isn't bad for them, is it?

Thanks James! Yeah I think it's really growing in well now. I'm excited about it.

Can't wait to get fish back in there. Will be another 6 weeks or so though. I just moved my office fish home today and will start Cupramine treatment later next week. Then Prazipro treatment after that.

A little bit of bad news today though. I just noticed this evening flatworms on my gonipora! I'm guessing they survived the Pro Coral Cure dips I did on my pieces from my office tank which I know is infested with them. Ugh...always something!

Do you guys think I should go ahead and treat with that Flatworm Exit stuff? I've read that when they die they're release toxins into the tank, but as far as I can tell there are very few right now. I'm thinking I should nip this in the bud. Are there any other issues with using Flatworm Exit?

no good updates. Ich has to be gone from DT since it's been fallow for 2 months. I'm finally treating my fish in QT with cupramine. following the instructions very closely and the Cu level is coming up very slowly which is i guess what you want. I did expect it to be at 0.5 already though (after about a week). maybe I'm going TOO slow?

one weird thing...2 days ago I noticed a nassarius snail on the glass of the QT tank. I only put equipment and bagged, dead sand in there and then only fish. I have NO idea how this guy got in there. Maybe he hitchhiked on a fish somehow? He wasn't real big, but at least the size of a black bean or something. Not sure how it could've hitch hiked on a fish. Luckiest guy I know right now though. I plucked him out and put him in the big tank. Right before dosing cupramine again. The level was at about 0.15-0.2 when I found him.

main tank is looking really great and I noticed yesterday that almost all of the vermetid's I had in there (loads) are gone. I guess because the fish are gone and I'm not really feeding much they died. The weird thing is their little tubes are gone too. I wonder if shrimp or crabs eat those guys? I'm going to treat for the flatworms tonight I think. Still very few visible so I'm hoping I don't have a big prob with them dying and releasing toxins. I just changed the carbon in my reactor and put a bit extra in there and I have 35gal of NSW ready for the change. I plan on treating and then doing a big WC a few hours later.

I should be good to move fish back in by St. Patty's day. That's my new goal.

Well apparently I pussed out on my flat worm exit treatent cause I still have some flatworms tonight and they're alive. ugh. And I used almost all of the bottle so I don't even have enough to treat again. I'll have to buy some more and do another dose in a couple weeks and this time probably just the whole bottle. Last night I treated 150gal at first and then added another 75gal worth after about 45min when I didn't see enough dying. I think I probably started the carbon too soon and changed too much water too soon. Oh well. Live and learn.

Sounds like it's been rough for a while Lyle, that really sucks man. What are the signs of a flatworm infestation? I think I might be preparing for war this weekend, aiptasia may be in my tank :uzi:

What fish are left alive in the QT? Any new corals? I've been eager for updates!!!

Flatworms are harmless individually, but they reproduce like crazy and annoy/kill corals. They're small, flat disks that don't even look like worms and most of the time they barely even move. When you treat for them they move like crazy until they release and die. When they die they release a toxin into the water that is very toxic to all life in the tank when enough of them die at once. That's why you have to run carbon and do large water changes right after you treat and kill the FWs. I ran the carbon and changed too much water too fast cause I was really worried about the toxins killing my corals. Because of that I didn't kill all the worms, but I severely knocked them back so the next treatment should take care of them and I can run it longer because there will be less dying and releasing toxin.

QT is going really well actually. I haven't lost a single fish in there. One of my gold head gobies doesn't seem to be eating well though and looks way too skinny. I'll probably lose that one I'm guessing. Right now I have the pair of gobies, a red scooter blenny, 3 blue/green chromis, hawkfish, and my clarkii clown. I have my cupramine sitting at 0.5 so if there were any ich left in the fish it won't be there for long. In a week I'll change a bunch of water and start the prazipro treatment to get rid of anything else I can't see that may be there and then I should be done. Honestly the whole process has gone pretty smoothly. It's a pain, but certainly the way to go for the long run. Once I get these fish back in the DT and my QT is clear I'm going to buy a few more fish. I really want another trio of Bartlett's Anthias' and another Kole Tang...at least. I really miss those fish and was most bummed to lose them.

I bought 10 peppermint shrimp and they didn't do anything to my aptasia for a couple weeks and then all of a sudden one day I barely had any (I only had 8-10 to begin with but I wasn't taking any chances!). They won't eat big ones (>1.5" or so) but if you knock those down with kalk paste or one of those treatments the peppermints can keep them in check after that. Plus they're fun to watch and cheap. I'd try some of those.

Well those sound just as bad as the aiptasia/dark majano! Hopefully you get all of them in the next round of treatment!

That's great that you've got those fish alive. Glad that the ich is gone, takes the fun away for 8 weeks! I plan on getting a kole tang, I love their personality. I'll have my QT set up within a month, and wil make sure to QT everything before it enter the display tank. Do you dip your coral before they go in the DT? I'm wondering if I should do that.

I've got one huge aiptasia the size of someones thumb that I just found, and the rest (5-10) are little dark majanos. Aiptasia X is coming on Tuesday, and once my cycle is done I'll add some peppermint shrimp to make sure everything is gone. I'm a little worried, but I thnk I'll be able to knock it back.

The kole tang was really cool and did have a good personality. the best personality fish I've had so far is my flame hawk though. such a cool little guy. his eyes move like a chameleon too and he's always checking me out.

I do dip my coral. I dip in Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure. It knocks off a lot of bad things. Apparently not flat worms though so now I'm also going to dip in Flatworm exit before putting the coral in my QT and before I move them into the DT from the QT. Honestly I didn't dip at first and the couple corals I've moved without dipping don't look as good as those that were dipped. It seems to be really beneficial for them.

I was trying to decide between a longnose or a flame hawk fish. I'm starting to lean towards the flame though, he seems to be a cool little guy. How territorial is he?

So would you mix both dips into one? Or would you have two seperate containers, and dip in each?

the flame hawk doesn't seem territorial at all. he's all over the place constantly and nobody really messes with him either. it's cool to watch him swim like crazy to get all the way to the top of the tank and then he glides down across the tank like he's soaring. looks like a lot of fun!

i don't think you should mix dip. i haven't done the flatworm exit dip yet, but i will likely do that dip first (for like an hour as it take a bit to kill those suckers) and then i'll dip them in the coral cure.

Of course, you do have 75 gallons on me! Yep, you've made me revise my fish list! 3 more weeks and I'll have animals!!!!

So you would dip in flatworm, and either put in the qt for that hour or leave it in the dip for an hour?

I've noticed recently that my main tank is REALLY clean and my urchin almost seems to be getting scrawny so I'm wondering if he's not getting enough to eat. I've been feeding the corals reef chili and adding some frozen food in there once or twice a week for the crabs but maybe it's just not enough. i watched that video james posted about the urchins eating the kelp and thought that maybe he'd like some algae. the shrimp LOVED it and were all over it and fighting over it in like 3 seconds. hopefully they'll leave enough for "spikey".

My 2 weeks of Cupramine treatment is officially over in the QT so I'm not going to add anymore and slowly bring the level of Cu back down over the next week. Then I'm going to do a round of Prazipro for a week and then it's go time! Finally have fish in the DT again in a couple weeks. I think I'm probably taking it TOO slow, but I really don't want another ich incident. Hopefully I had the Cupramine high enough for long enough. I think I was close to 0.5 so hopefully it was enough. Especially since I kept the salinity down a bit too and am going a bit over 2 weeks. Certainly no sign of ich in the QT since I lost the Kole Tang in there. Fish seem very healthy.

While I'm updating here are some pics of the coral I have in QT. Looking really good too. I'll probably most these guys over a few days before the fish.

Zoas are looking really good and multiplying already which is what I've been waiting for.

That's a neat little magnet you've got to hold your kelp on! Did you pick that up online, I would love to get one! My new shrimp would love it also :D

I really need to break down my 29g freshwater this weekend and convert it into a QT, prep it for some fish. I'm glad your fish are doing okay and hopefully ich free! I see the clown and the flame hawkfish and the three chromis, what fish are you thinking about adding?

You still make me want a coral QT, I just can't afford to add another light system at the moment. I've got lots to buy still for my DT. On the middle left row of your coral QT, to the left of the powerhead, what's that coral in the back?

I pick everything up online and it is a great clip! Worlds better than the suction cup ones. They never held suction for me and this one you can move around inside the tank from the outside which is a nice bonus.

There's also a gold head gobie and a red scooter blenny in the QT. I'm going to add another Kole Tang and probably a Sailfin. Also another trio of Bartlett's Anthias'. After that I MAY try another Hippo but may just forget it on them. I think they're beautiful but, fool me twice...

That's another piece of candy cane coral that fell over. I don't know why that pic is so blurry on there. It didn't look that bad on my phone! I have a couple kinds of SPS in there...and couple pieces of candy candy...several different zoas and palys...and the several pieces of brain that used to be just one great piece!
