Lyretail anthias sex change....a new record?

Squarespots are one of my favorite anthias. If I had a BIG tank, I would have them for sure! Sweet looking male, BTW!

Yeah... he is my biggest fish by FAR, anand the only SP anthias in there. I have a lot of caves and angles in my tank, so although he is big, I think he has enough room. He is a picky eater though. Won't take Mysis... jsut spits them out. All he will eat now is chopped scallops (with selcon and garlic) and salmon roe. I toss him the roe so that he can get some oils in his diet. He sometimes spits that out as well. I think it is becasue he was very large when I got him, so he must have spent years in the wild.

Also have a pair of Borbonius... love them as well.

Try differnt brands of mysis...I have found that my anthias prefer some over others...

I was thinking about something else worth pointing out on this thread...

I posted above about how my male died and the female took his place within days. Originally, I had a male whom I added three females to. The three females were in QT for at least a few weeks, and none of them changed in there. Maybe its a stress/"settling in" issue, or the cue of a male losing health, but obviously there are different timelines going on.

I have also seen threads where people have a sort of half changed female/male for over a year. So yes, I agree, there must be multiple factors which cause this to happen. My guess would be that this is how it happens in nature though... fast!

Beautiful fish. I love the progression shots of the change you provide.

I have a trio of Lyretails that are settling into my 120. I am looking forward to watching one of mine change.

I just put an updated picture of my male on my thread about his sex change from a year ago. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1531326 I really like the dark purple color your male is forming, but Im not disappointed in mines color.

I am sort of glad that the "next in line" female was Indo... now I get to have several years of a purple one (thought the red maldive specimens are still my favorite).

I had 2 females and 1 male...well the male just died and seems a female is already becoming more purple..and I mean I kept checking him and he dropped within 20 mins ago..my question is, if a female changes there will be only 1 female left would that stay that way? I may add smaller females

Does a mlae ever become a female?

Does a mlae ever become a female?

Does a male ever become a female ? Is there any special case like that?
