Lyretail Anthias

When I got the shipment of 4 Lyretail Anthias in last week there was suppose to be one male and 3 female. Well low and behold there was 4 that were all changing into males. I came home yesterday from being out of town and there was only one still alive and the 3 dead looked like they had bite wounds on them. When I was out of town I was talking to a LFS in Dallas and they said that it isnt good to have all transforming into males as it would cause aggression issues( I didnt know about the 3 dying yet).

Also my said they were all eating the night before but there was one that was chasing and nipping at the other 3.

Yalls input is greatly appreciated

I have 3 (i ordered all female) and i believe all 3 were starting to change as well. Now i can see 1 that is very aggressive towards the other 2 and now his top spike is longer too. None of mine have died and i want to keep it that way. They all are still more orange than red. I will jump on this thread to see more outcomes.

All four where this color but slightly darker.

A while back I had 2 females and 1 changed to male. Never got the bright male coloration, but grew the spike and got darker. It was definitely the dominate one.

I now have 3 total - 1 male and 2 females. The male runs the show, then the next female, then the last female.

From what I've read, it's not good to have multiple males unless the tank is large. I'd call the place that sent you the changing females and explain it to then. My opinion, they should either take care of you or take your business to another vender.

It was a LFS in Dallas who ships out livestock that is special ordered. I have already contacted them about it and they are giving me credit for the 3.

All 4 of them had the spike and colored like the pic above except for being alittle darker.

I ran test as well and everything was in range except for Nitrates being at 20. which of course would happen with fish dying and causing it to go up. I am getting nice Coraline growth on my rocks and the one glass panel that I dont clean(not a viewing side).

The last remaining one(dominant one) ate like a pig when I fed today.

I wish there was a section on here for tank builds for tanks between the Nano and the Large(180+) tanks for us with mid sized tanks.

It's highly depends on luck. This is my second time trying lyretail anthias and the first time all 4 of mine came in as female and they all went through a 6 weeks of QT process. And all of them started to change and fought each other to death.

This time around, things were almost the same, 4 females being shipped and one soon turned male during the QT process. There are a few minor things worth mentioning.

I was a newbie when I tried them the first time and I was drawn to them. Because it was a new tank, I spent lots of time watching them. I was also very concerned about their chasing worried about the smallest one would die from hiding.

This time, it's 4 years later. I have done this many times and I have 2 tanks to maintain and work was busy as well. The biggest difference is, last time I had a lot of presence in front of the tank. And when they started chasing each other, being a newbie I thought it would be smart to drop a little extra food so it'll ease the tension and nobody would get hurt. What I didn't notice is my presence and interacting with them did not help at all. They didn't have a chance to work out their order. And soon, all 4 started turning and only one was left.

This time, I was occupied and I'm also used to fish chasing each other. This time I let nature ran its course and I let them chase each other knowing that they will kill each other anyways. First week everyone was chasing a little, soon 1 became the boss and she chased everyone every now and then for no reasons. And 1 stood out as the last of the pack that gets chased by everyone. This one almost didn't make it, it hid for almost a week and did not come out to eat. It got skinny after 6 weeks of QT but has picked up weight since it went into the DT.

Long story short, try to give them time and space to fight it out. The sooner the better. It definitely was a little more action than I was comfortable but I knew it was necessary even means that one might not make it. Good luck!

I put up a poll on reef central here about the site making a change and adding the mid sized section. I TRULY believe it would work very well and help many ppl out. but I got an over whelming negative response about it, saying that is what the reef discussion section is for... I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU THAT THERE SHOULD BE A SECTION FOR NANO TANKS, MID RANGE TANKS, AND THE LARGER TANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! totally agree

They had been working it out but then I went out of town for 3 days for work and the only thing going with the tank should have been the feeding by my wife. As all kids are in school and wife works. Everything is on a timer so lighting is consistent day in and day out.

The loan remaining Lyretail is doing well and healthy. New skimmer is in place as of the day I got back home and running well.
