Where are they found?

Hawaii and the Society lslands to East Africa. They frequently are found in the low intertidal, but may occur to depths of several meters. This is the largest of all stomatopods reaching a maximum size of 40 cm. Monogamous, pairs may stay together for up to 20 years.

thanks Dr. Roy, dose anyone know of a spearer species that stays a little smaller than 40cm

P.Cilata stay much smaller than that, and they seem to be fairly regularly encountered. There is a store in San Jose (near me) for example, that can get them.

[Gonodactylus]

P. ciliata is one of the most broadly distributed of all stomatopods. It is found from the Society Islands and Hawaii to East Africa and the Caribbean. The only tropical waters where it is not found is on the west coast of the Americas. It is also found in fairly temporate waters including Japan and Bermuda. Depth distribution is from the intertidal to at least 50 m.
