I have a goby/pistol pair. Had a cleaner shrimp for a year with them...no prob (until my pseudochromis decided to rip off the cleaner's body parts). Anyways, just a warning....those shrimp move A LOT of sand. I hope those rocks are on some sort of PVC supports or something under the sand, otherwise things will start falling.

Ya, the goby and shrimp may not be the best idea. I don't want them tunneling under the rock and weaken things. The last thing I want is to come home to corals smashed under the rocks and a scratched up tank.

Right now, the next fish on my list is a Sixline Wrasse. I will only add one more fish after that. I'm keeping my limit at 4 fish.

Just curious...how do you like you M-tank? Does it look like you could add a sump to the overall setup?

So far it's not bad. You could add a sump to the setup but it would require some thought to get it right. I was going to add one but didn't feel like putting the time and money into it. By the time I added a sump, pump, and return / intake lines, I might as well upgrade the tank to something that is designed with an internal overflow and used with a sump setup.

The tank setup is similar to the Sea Clear System II setups with the filtration system integrated into the back of the tank behind a false wall.

The tank is "somewhat" easy to maintain and the skimmer works really well.

The stock lighting is a bit lacking at only 110W but I upgraded that to 192W of PC before I started the tank. I think Finnex offers an M-Tank with HQI lighting now. I will upgrade to a Halide lighting system sometime in the near future (if I don't upgrade the whole tank first :))

I'm not a big fan of those rain trays either. In order to remove them you have to disconnect the return pump which makes changing filter media a hassle. I only run two of the four rain trays and of those two only the top one uses a 100 micron filter cloth that I can easily change when it gets dirty. The other sits empty. I run carbon in a media bag in the skimmer compartment.

The bottom line; If I did it all over, I'd skip the M-Tank and get something in acrylic with an internal overflow that could be connected to a sump underneath the tank.

I miss having my 55 with the hang on overflow and the Marineland Tidepool underneath the tank. It was so much easier to work on.

I think I'm going to get one, hopefully with upgraded lighting and a closed loop :D (If things go well at least).

how did you cycle so fast?

I'm like 6 weeks in and I still have high nitrites...did you get rock from an established tank?

your tank looks great

Thanks!

My rock was fresh from the ocean. It had been delivered to my LFS the day before I purchased it. I scrubbed off what stunk and tossed the rock in the tank and let it cure. I cycled the tank in just about two weeks.

Try cleaning off your rock with a power head or turkey baster. I use a Magnum HOT filter with a micron cartridge to "dust" the rock off and vaccum up the junk on the rocks. I do this every other week. It keeps the tank very clean.

I haven't done a single water change yet and have no intention on doing one. I very rarely did water changes on my 55 when it was up and the tank did awesome.

I only keep five fish in the tank...

1 Sixline Wrasse
2 True Perc Clowns
2 Yellow Head Jawfish

So far corals are...

1 Green Open Brain
1 Yellow Polyp Colony
1 Toadstool Leather
1 Xena

I just noticed that you're ditching the M-tank for a 20L...whats going on with the M-tank? :D

The thought has certainly crossed my mind. The M-Tank is working well, I broke the skimmer while cleaning it though.

Actually, I'm currently using a Berlin Air-Lift 60 with a wood air stone and pump. Believe it or not, this skimmer actually works better than that piece of junk the tank came with. I do want to upgrade the skimmer to the Tunze nano DOC skimmer when/if it ever comes out. I think that's about the only skimmer that will fit in that small compartment.

I'm also beginning to get the urge to keep SPS as well and I'm obviously concerned about lighting. Flow I can achieve, lighting may not be so easy.

I just ordered a 250W 14K Pendant for the tank. Finnex is not really sure how the top center brace will react to the heat from that much lighting but I'm going to find out. I was at my LFS on Saturday and he uses 250W 14K Reefstars over all of his coral display tanks. After placing my hand under these pendants at my LFS, if I keep my pendant about 10"-15" off the top of the M-Tank I think I'll be ok. If I lower the pendants, I'll have to place a fan in between the light and the top of the tank. To help cool the water and to keep the center brace cool.

So I'll see....if the M-Tank doesn't overheat and melt, I may keep it.

I'm going to eventually set up the 20L weather or not I keep the M-Tank.
