So even though I have 5 years in this hobby I haven't been as hardcore as I would have liked.....but now I'm going to make a run at it, and wnat to goto MACNA next year......but how do I convinve my girlfriend that its worth paying the $75 or $100 dollars for each of us to go.....Other than speakers (because I dont think she'll be that interested in most of those)....what can I use to convince her to let us go.....I understand this is probably a silly question but I want some input so I can put together a logical arguement....To give you an idea she is not very reef oriented but lets me enjoy the hobby....and makes the sacrifices to let me do so...so I'm thinking of trying to get her involved in the hobby so that we can enjoy it together ....and I think MACNA is the best chance I have....but I have to actually get her to go...any ideas ???/

thanks

For starters, the $75 registration includes all the speakers, the trade show, the reception Friday night, and the banquet Saturday, so at the very least you will get a meal. Plus, while it is very educational, MACNA is also a social event.

$75 is as cheap as a MACNA will ever be and who knows when the next time it will be in Pittsburgh.

If you would have attended the Houston Macna it could very well have cost 10 times that amount after hotel/airfare/meals/taxi.

I imagine there will also be a bunch of freebies to be had there also.

Where else can you sit down and have a beer with Eric Borneman, Dr. Ron Shimek, Daniel Knop, Helmut Debelius, or any of the other speakers we have coming.

I know that and thats exactly why I'm excited....but I'm looking for something for her.....ie pretty fishes, display tanks, etc.....in other words stuff to keep her occupied while I browse vendors...

But Im loving the ideas so far

There will be a number of livestock vendors with beuatiful specimens as well as several exhibitors that will setup display aquariums just to attract attention.

Ahh just tell her she can sit in the bar with me a chuck... We are raffling off tickets for the seats on either side of us :)

hmmm.....somehow I dont think sitting at a bar would interest her....but a good conversation would.....the display tanks def help the cause....as well as being able to pick out a coral or two or three....:)

any other suggestions

Ed

Ed... we will talk to her ;) Chuck and I are just like the Mutabi twins from SNL!

I guess we could make a list of ladies that are planning to attend with their fish geeks. They could do some shopping (cringe) during part of the time and then join us for dinner.

I am not sure if Pattie is going or not...

Chuck... is your wife going? I promise not to tell her about the kitchen scale!

Bean,

Remember "What goes on at fish geek meetings--Stays at fish geek meetings" LOL

You will probably find her reading / buying books at Borders that weekend

On her book list:
1. How to get your guy to pay less attn to his fish tank
2. Book of REAL prices of marine aquarium hobby items
3. Why your husband has no problem cleaning out skimmer gunk but runs like Forest Gump when the baby needs changed

:D

Speaking which... anybody up for grabbing a few beers this coming week or weekend... I am thirsty. We can go to a bar or do it here. We can all ooh and ahh over my button polyps for 10 minutes then get to the real business at hand.... waving goodbye to summer with a few bottles of the good stuff.

Better yet she can become a guide for the weekend and take reefer's families around and show them Pittsburgh

My wife will be with me for the trade show and banquet but none of the workshops or anything(atleast at this time) so she is up to checking out the happening of Pittsburgh

I would love to, but I am going to be working at the greenhouse all weekend.
