In nature plants have adapted to a light/dark cycle, and will grow best under these conditions as long as adequate nutrients are provided.
In the case of caulerpa there does seem to be some correlation between running lights 24/7 and preventing it from sporulating ( going sexual ), but again as long as the plant is regularly pruned, and adequate nutrients are provided sporulation is an event which is unlikely to occur. There are other drawbacks with caulerpa, and with the many other macros available I wouldnt recommend it.
With other macros run your lights with a dark cycle.
