Macro algae only tank.

tektite,

I have the following snails,

Nerite,
Cerith,
Dwarf Cerith,

What are your thoughts about living with my algae?

Thanks

Bryn

Do you have any other suggestions on what I could or should add from the invert world.

Thank you,

Bryn

Dwarf blue leg hermits should be fine. They are one of the most reef safe hermits and should be fine with the macros too. Just make sure they have lots of shells!

I will go off and search that out. The snails are interesting, but move very slowly. Actually most of my Cerith snails must be miners in a past life, they have all gone under ground. A nice crab would be interesting.

Small hermit crabs are usually OK, some even help keep some macros clean. They can snip delicate thin branched macros though. What inverts you can safely add will be dictated by what macros you end up keeping.

Thanks. I'm going to try Dwarf blue leg hermits, maybe 2 in a 40g tank, and see what happens.

Bryn

I'd think you'd want more than 2, maybe 5 or even more. I just think you'd never see them in a 40g if you only have 2. Again though, do what you like best! Any pics of the tank so far?

Not a great picture, and the tank is dirty, but here is a start.

I need to remotely host these pictures so the resolution is better. Only using the 750 Hydor on the right, the left power head is not on.

Ok I did some more reading about the Blue leg Crabs, and maybe only two crabs would not be enough. Especially when I got to thinking about the size, and also the food supply.

Also this macro has now turned light green, I'm suspecting that all the red pigment disappeared leaving the suppressed green behind. Time to remove it...

Also can anyone id this please.

Quick question, checked salinity and found it at 1.030sg, I want to bring this back down to 1.025. Can I just add RO/DI water in one batch or should I add it slowly?

Thanks

Bryn

Thanks tektite for the reply,

I added a gallon to approx 38g in 1min, too fast? If no inverts how fast do you think I could add it?

Thanks

Another question concerning RO/DI water, if I'm running solely macros, do I need the DI water, or can I tap off after the RO section, by passing the DI filter?

Thanks

Bryn

I'd lower it in one day with no livestock in it. With inverts though I'd take 2-3 days to lower it.

I need to take another full tank picture, things are moving quickly, especially the Eucheuma.

I have three tanks with macro in them, so will be playing with some different parameters.

One interesting problem I have is some of the Caulerpa is growing rapidly, but quickly turning brown and dying.

But I'm enjoying myself.

This is my marine plant tank and I've been running for 17 months. The tank is a 40 gal breeder and I modified it into an all in one system together with my diy led light fixture. The tank has more than 25 different or similar types of macro algae mostly are red algae but has 6 types of brown algae particularly the padina I just added couple of days before ( I had tried a few times of keeping padina supplied from philippines without success, this time I try the one obtained from Florida ). Other than macro algae, a few pipefish ( 5 of them in 3 types ) and 20 + shrimps are being kept in this system.
