is this a rare kind of macro?

I saw some of this stuff in my LFS a few weeks ago. No idea what it is, but is really cool. The stuff in the LFS was all over Tonga Branch. It is soft to touch. Reminds me of fungus. Looks like the the same stuff. The LFS owner called it "Macro Algae"

Before I could even ask how much it was, another guy bought it right under my nose....... all of it ..... git :D

If you can, see if you can get a small frag of it instead of the whole piece and try to attach it to some rock.

oh.. i already bought it.. i wasnt leaving without it lol.. no matter the cost of the coral (well.. i mean.. it had to be reasonable of course.. i think it was around $40)..
it is soft.. and feels kinda slimey.... and mine is on a dead coral skeleton
also it flourecses [sp] under actinics

i would.. but im afraid to ship anything... i have never done it... plus my dad prob. wouldnt let me (im 14... these are my tanks.. but he pays for them :) so he's incharge)

It keyed out to Tapeinodasya for me but who knows if that's right... Is it growing in high light or low light? Has it grown since you got it?

Kevin

i have only had it for a week.. so no noticable growth... its under Metal Halides.... but i just moved it donw further because it seemed to be getting lighter....and now i think the red is coming back

I love when Kevin's around, we get really great IDs! :) I think its going to be a low-light lover too.. mainly based off your note that its flourescing. I have yet to have an algae that flouresced as a sign that it was 'happy'. Its usually a sign of stress. I know with Halymenia and Hypnea, which are similar to this one.. fleshy.. flourescent peices of the thallus will go clear and die off.
