Macro lens advice

So I own a nikon D7000 SLR and I'm looking to buy a macro lens either the nikon 2.8 60mm macro. The tamron 2.8 90 mm macro. Or the tokina 2.8 100mm macro. Any advice on which one would be helpful

Take a peak at the sticky about macro lenses. Short answer: all three will give you the same magnification.

I did but it doesn't say anything about user satisfaction and nuances. Such as a nikon 60mm is too short and 1:1 is achieved by getting ultra close which may be impossible if frags are too far back in tank. The tamron is great@ 90 mm but it has external focusing the tokina Is great too and at 100mm plus cheaper than the tamron it gets very tempting. I guess I basically just ruled out the 60 mm by nikon. So that just leaves the tamron vs tokina. My question remains which one are people happier with. Which one would you go with

you got it, I own a d7000 and a 60mm macro and the 105mm macro both from nikon

60mm you gotta get close, also the front pokes out as you focus

105 lets you stay farther back

Beware, a cheaper lens may not give the sharpest results

I don't think tamron or tokina are cheaper lenses. Maybe more inexpensive and different build quality materials but both tamron and tokina have as sharp if not sharper than even Nikon and half the price. Reviews regard them all highly as far as sharpness. The only real issue with the less expensive lenses lies in focus hunting motor noise or plasticky feel and external barrel focusing cause lens to get longer but on a sharpness quality count they all fare well. My question again is do people prefer tamron over tokina.

All three are fine. The Sigma 105 also falls into that category. If you get used ones, they most likely end up being the screw drive. No big deal because most focusing on tanks should be in manual anyway, but for shooting other things, it's nice. I will say though, the Nikon 105 is the cats meow!!!

If I could afford the nikon 105mm it would be a no brainer hands down no thread needed lol. However I'm working with a $500 budget which is why I narrowed it down to the previous two choices. The nikon105 comes in shy of $1,000

I'm pretty darn happy with my Tamron 90 on my Canon 7D. I've posted some pics in this forum, most of which were taken with that lens. I think I got mine used for $375 Canadian with a UV filter. Only 1 year old and in near mint condition. I've never used a Tokina lens.

Really where

Just went over on ebay. Searched Nikon 105mm micro. 13 on the first page still under 500 bucks, the others were AF-S. B&H has them once and a while too. Had one last week, but they still go fast. They were asking 489.

just watch the ebay lister's ratings and what they describe the lens flaws as

you can also get them used off amazon

Sigma 105mm is definitely worth a look, I used one on my D7000 before I got my D600 and the results were pleasing. I'm not a fan of the external focusing though so I went for the newer HSM OS model.

Hey Aaron the head shot pictures of the fish you posted on another thread did u use that 105mm sigma those pictures were amazing how did you achieve that dark background. Was it a fast shutter speed and a small aperture combo with or without flash just simply amazing

Thanks.

I used the Sigma for all of those pictures, the black background was done using Photoshop by adding a layer and a mask and painting over the background. From memory I think the Iridis Wrasse was 1/320, f4, ISO 800. I used a D7000 for that one.

Cheers.

So I finally bit the bullet and purchased A brand new Nikon micro 105mm macro with VRII lens thanks for all that advice ill post pics soon watch for new thread lol
