Mag 12 Question

So my Bullet 1 skimmer will be here this week and I will be getting everything plumbed and ready for it to hook up this weekend.

I need to plan for pump location, and plan for how many holes I need to pop in the sump.

What's everyone's experience with the Mag pumps? I want as little heat transfer as possible, and need to decide if I am going to run the Mag 12 outside the sump - do they get very warm? If it's a scorcher I will run it out of sump, but if it runs cool, I won't go the extra step and just run in-sump. I want as little heat transfer as possible.

Thanks for any and all advice!

I ahve a mag and it does tranfer a little heat. A mag 12 is pretty hefty. I use a mag 9.5 on my sump return and it was plenty. My assumption is the mag 12 will givew off some heat.

My QuietOne 6000 gives off a little less heat than the mag.

I think the mag 9.5 I have puts our more volume at the head distance than my QO 6000.

On both of them, if you run them out of the sump the manufacturer states you may get slightly less life out of them. I don;t think it's anything to worry about, but always a tickle in the back of the mind.

That's what I heard... I'm thinking I may switch over to a ReeFlo Snapper after it dies, and run the Bullet 1, Carbon reactor, GFO reactor, and also a chiller off the Snapper.

I run a mag 18 out of the sump, but it pushes water to the gfo/carbon reactor, chiller, frag tank and display tank. so far no problems with it. It did replace my quietone 6000 that died after about 1 year in the sump. I like my mag pumps:)

Excellent. How long has it been running out of sump?

Since we're on the topic of pumps, what's the opinion of a Pan-World 100 px-x for sump return?

I found a good deal on one of these brand new so I'm planning on using it as the return for my new tank. I'd be interested in hearing other's experiences as well.

Hey Zach.... my bad.. running out of the sump was what I typed, but it runs from the sump (under water) sorry for the bad choice of words.

No worries :)

I'm going to use the pump in-sump temporarily, as I decide on the final choice of pumps. I plan to upgrade to a larger tank within the next year or two, most likely a 180+ so I want to buy larger equipment now. I can always valve down.

i'm doing a mag 9.5 externally for my closed loop on my new build...when it finally shats the bed, i'll be replacing it w/ a pan world (probably a 150ps)

I definitely recommend the PanWorld (a bit expensive) or the Reeflo pumps. Personally, I'm planning on going with a Reeflo for my 300g in the future. :)
