Mag 24 Self Desctruction

I have a Mag 24 that I use to pump water change water up from my basement. I use it about once a week, or so. When doing my last water change, I turned off the pump, turned it back on, and nothing. When I took it apart, the magnet on the impeller had a huge gouge running along the entire length, and obviously it was seizing up. I don't see anything

Anybody ever experience this strange occurrence? I wonder if I buy a new impeller whether it will seize as well.

Any thoughts?

I've seen the plastic casings split around the magnets before... in the cases I've seen the saltwater caused the magnet to begin rusting, which caused it to expand/swell in diameter... in some cases seizing inside the pump housing - this has generally happened in pumps improperly cleaned before being stored.
