MAG Flake Manufacturer Claims about Suitability

Randy, you had mentioned above that you supplement your IO water with mag flakes, do you know how much mag flakes and/or other supplements you add per galon of makeup water before using it for your reef tank?

You know I have come to realize that there statement may stem from the fact that most of these chemicals have statements that it is against the law to use them for anything other then there intended use. If thats the case then I can see why they would be so adiment about there statement.

But that "law" is just to protect the manufacturer from being sued when something goes wrong in another application. Any manufacturer can say any product is suitable for any or all uses, if they choose to, short of a few specially regulated thing like foods, drugs, and cosmetics.

Well, two problems. The first was to save huge amounts of money over hobby products.

The second is that the Seachem product isn't even a good choice among hobby brands as it is not ionically balanced. ESV or Kent's products are a better choice, IMO, if you want to buy aquarium products.

FWIW, I've never heard of anyone having a problem with the MAG flake. I use it myself. :)

Hmm. It says it is ionically ballanced. I was hoping it would be similar to the mag flake -- it looks like it is a powder...

There is a long list of possible contaminants that was tested for or reported on originally. You mean in addition to that? IMO, most hobbyists need not bother testing if they start using any given batch slowly, but if you are interested in testing, ammonia is about the only worthwhile one, IMO.
