Mag - Need advice

I purchased a medium sized mag(about 5" in diameter inflated) from LiveAquaria (not DD). Received it last Tuesday and it had been looking well until yesterday when it moved down a bit and I noticed the mouth no longer "puckered".

I assume it's sick and I need to start to treat it (have a hospital tank and meds ready to go). I'm just unsure as to what health level to rate it at?

I assume I'm looking at one of the 2 levels:
3 - Tentacles shortened, still fully inflated, mouth slightly open, responsive to touch
4 - Tentacles shortened, still fully inflated, mouth open, responsive to touch

I assume he's not bad enough to where I need to start with anything higher than 250mg cipro?

I would take the wait and see approach for now... he looks pretty good for just being shipped.... they take a week or so to really acclimate (light/water) and unless you are seeing it inflate and deflate daily in a cycle i would wait until a full week in the DT to determine health.

You don't want to add more stress by yanking it out and throwing it in a HT.

So on Saturday I came down to find the mag looking like a pile of mush. It stayed that way pretty much all day at which time I got rather concerned and moved it to a 10G HT that I had ready to go just in case.

Sat & Sunday I treated with 250 Cipro with minimal improvement. He inflated at times but would completely deflate at intervals, attached to the bottom of the tank continually, but mouth was never tight closed

Monday - Wed I increased the dosage to 500 Cipro with no visible improvement,

Wed night I backed the cipro down to 250 and added 400/80 of SMZ&TP. Almost overnight change. I have stuck with this regime since Wednesday and am quite pleased with the overall appearance as it is today.



My biggest question at this point is how long should I maintain this regime? Since it seems the SMZ&TP had a huge impact should maintain this past the 7 day mark of treatment (Saturday) or should I stop treatment on Saturday and observe for a few day?

At what point should I start to transition DT water into the HT to start an acclimation to the DT water?

Oddly enough he's never moved from the spot he is. I've tried multiple mugs, but he seems quite content to stay firmly attached to the bottom of the tank.

sorry, I used Septra starting on Wednesday.

I reintroduced the mag back to the DT on Sunday night. So far so good, although a little faded in color. Has not moved from where I reintroduced it and seems to be doing well. I guess at this point only time will tell.

Love his color, looking good. Give it a month or two the color will darken nicely.

Hope he continue to do well for you. I think antibiotic have the best impact on Magnifica but not as great on Gigantea.

So you did five days of cipro / sulfa-trim combo? How is the nem doing so far, since treatment stopped ?

So it was 7 days of Cipro and 5 days of Septra.

Yesterday he partially deflated and moved down a bit. I think it was a bit of a fluke (against my better judgement I fed some PE Mysis.. which he readily ate and then spit back out later). I don't intend on feeding again, so I should be able to track any other deflates.

I'm still hopeful that he moves up..I'm actually surprised that he seems comfortable so low in the tank. I assume the flow and the light is adequate even in this lower location.

He is probably moving down because he is partially bleached from treatment. When I added a bleached mag to my 90 cube, he did the same thing, but when he regained his color, he moved back up.

Call me overly cautious at this point.

The last couple evenings after lights out this is what I'm seeing..

I'd like to believe I need to just wait it out and see, but I know these guys can go downhill in a hurry.. So wondering if this is headed back in the direction of HT and treatment once again.

Water conditions are what I would perceive as acceptable levels.

Nitrate - .2 ppm
Phosphate - .05 ppm
Salinity - 35 ppt
Alkalinity - 9 dkh

My mag partially deflates his tents all the time especially at night, in my opinion, it is no big deal at all. If you see the main body deflate, its big trouble and time to treat.

settled in really nice. Get's a bit close to one of my powerhead, but since he would have to detach to get sucked into it, I've been cautiously optimistic I'll be able to remove the foam cover eventually

Looking good. I think after more than a month, he is on his way to recovery. Best of luck with him.

Make use the rock he is on is stable and that he need to move down before he can move off of that group of rock, or get to the side of the tank. And make sure his tentacles cannot touch rocks/wall that is higher than where he is. I find that this is the best way to keep Magnifica to stay put.

So today was the first time the mag has "stood up". Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but mouth is tight and the only thing touching the live rock is his foot.

He looks fine. I would count this as a treatment success. Hope he will continue to do well. However if he died it is not because of infection of new imported anemone. Hi is a very nice purple magnifica
