Hello to all in the reefing world,

Does anyopne run any MAGS or QUIET ONE pumps externaly? had any problems, salt creep, leaks and so on? i am looking for a CL pump, wondering if these pumps would work?

Thanks in advance for any help

I have used both for many years. Although the makers of the mags don't recommend they be used externally, I have and successfully for years. I think they are just covering their butts. :D

They have both performed equally for me. When you are choosing which and how big, keep an eye on the wattage draw of the different models. A watt or two here and there can save $$$ over time.

Also look at head loss, meaning how many gph the pump decreases over a specified length of hose.

I personally prefer external over internal because of the heat the pump gives off. Not so much in the winter, but summer can be a problem. :)

Quiet one pumps

Quiet one pumps

I personally have 4 quiet one pumps running on my 75gal. reef. 2 of them are external and 2 are internal and have had no problems with salt creep, leaks, or any thing like that. The only problem I've encountered is when air gets trapped in the impeller assy. on the external units, it makes a little noise, but that is remedied easy enough.
As far as head loss goes, I'm led to believe that there is very little, if any, head loss on a closed loop system due to the fact that the inlet and outlet height's are close to each other.

Thanks KENM, i recently purchased a used MAG and i am running it externally. it does make a little noise BUT not as much as the other pumps but the one thing i noticed is how WARM it gets. i wonder if it being intended to run in water to help it run cooler?

Thanks for the feed back, i will probably be buying either a QUEIT ONE or MAG to replace the other pumps

The makers of the mag pumps actually DO reccomend them for external use. The people who sell them dont.

I'm not a big fan of them.. most of them are some of the least efficient pumps in their sector.

I use a QO1200 externally on my CA Rx and it works great. But like KENM said above, if you have a lot of undissolved CO2 buildup (or air) the pump can make a racket.

Only other issue is that it gets plenty warm. Moreso than any of my danner mag pumps that I run externally.

On the larger danner pumps (mag12 or larger) they seem to be ok externally. I haven't had much success with the smaller pumps outside of the sump although I have heard that if you buy the flat sheets of gasket material from the hardware store you can make your own gasket to seal the impeller housing. I haven't tried this myself so I can't say first hand if it works or not.

I've used a mag 5, 9, & 24. All as return pumps on various tanks. The 5 & 9 ran silent and were excellent pumps. The 24 is a little noisy. I would recommend using a larger size diameter pipe off the pump to reduce back pressure and noise. I went to a 2" diameter pipe and the noise reduction was substantial.

I'm not a fan of the QO's I had a couple of 1400's that really caused me some problems. One leaked like crazy as an external pump and the other one fromze up on my one day and then melted, or the other eay around, I wasn't there to witness the event. On the other hand I have never used a Mag pump but I hear relativly good things about them but I think that they suck to much power for the GPH you get. JMHO

i love my Q1's i run a 4000 on my CL through a SQWD and its perfect, doesnt leak, and tru to its name its also very quiet.
i also run a 2200 on my return and i cant complain one bit. I switched it out from a mag 5 becuase the mag was loud and heated up the water alot.

HTH
