I tested magnesium tonight with my Red Sea test kit and it came back at 1000ppm!!! What could cause that? What could that do to my reef and fish tank? And how do I raise it?
Below is a pic of my tank but everything looks fine to me
Thanks for your help
Raising Mg in the amount you need 400ppm increase with Epsom salt will also raise your sulfates a lot as well . I would recommend a commercial product for a tank that small and raise it by 100ppm per day until target is acheived. Red Sea Pro is a fine test, but please verify your results. Improper water changes will let Mg fall. How are your other foundation elements such as Ca and Alk. The Mg is what keeps them from precipertatating out of solution.
I just tested mine in the last couple of days for reef crystals and it came back with 1660@35ppt and I don't dose magnesium except a couple times a year. I need to do what I am about to tell you to do: Make a batch of new saltwater to the same salinity as your tank is and use the same test kit to measure it. If it is still 1000 and your tank is anywhere near normal salinity, I would take the water in to be tested somewhere else.
btw, if it really is 1000, it might be easier and better to do water changes to get it up; that will be an aweful lot of mangnesium to add.
Tech M is a good product. Repeat your test 3x to be sure. Then just start adding some, testing the following day, adding, waiting 8 hours, testing, etc. Rapid changes are not usually good, even if they're good changes.
Bad salt mix or you didn't shake and roll the bucket of salt around before mixing. Your salinity could also be low for what the mix says to mix it at. Likely calcium would be low in that case too.
