Magnesium/Online Calculator

I need to raise my Mag levels form 1000 ppm to 1300ppm. I have approx 140 gal total water volume. Using Randy's 2 part recipe, magnesium solution, the calculator says that I need 114 oz. Is this correct? If so, over how many days should I dose this?

Yes, you are correct. To increase the level 100ppm, it recommends 38oz. That still seems to be an awful high amount. I am just a little leary of causing any damage/stress to my corals and fish.

Like rbursek has said 100ppm per day is the norm limit, although I have done more.

What are you dosing with? Brand?

MagFlake says 46.7oz for a 300ppm swing at 140g.

Epsom salt is 53.3oz

Some of the brands that you get from the fish store's have other stuff in them so it may take more of them to get the Mg up.

I am using Randys recipe. So I chose that as my additive selection. I'm only using the Magnesium part of his recipe. Using Mag flake and Epsom Salts combination.

That's why it calls for so much then. With Randy's recipe you mix that with 1g of water, which dilutes the to xxxppm.

It will take more oz's then the dry mag or epson salts.

either way you do it is fine, I add the dry magflake to my IO water change water all the time with no issues.

However you may want to wait for Randy or Bertoni to chime in, they know a lot more about it than I ever will.

Thanx atvdave. I mixed the solution but have not yet dosed at this point. I will wait for Randy or Bertoni. Good advice :)

That still seems to be an awful high amount.

If you read Randy's article is says it will take allot. You will be waiting for Randy for a long time as he has left the forum again for a unknown time frame.

What that calculator says is what it is, 114 oz. So, each day for a 3 day period, you add 1/3 of that 114 oz or 38 oz / day for 3 days. Just dissolve it first in 1 l of water or 1 gal if you wish and add it slowly to a high flow area or the sump. You can if you want dump it in all at once.

The calculator has the amounts for the dry ingredients as well. You don't need to wait for Randy to hold your hand, LOL!

I am not waiting for him to hold my hand!! Please keep your non- productive comments to yourself. I am just making sure I am doing things correctly. I am aware that it has the amounts for dry ingredients as well, but according to his document, if I read it correctly, doing it that way is the least recommended of the three options.

Thank you Boomer. I appreciate the help. I guess I was not expecting it to be that much. (114). :)

Update..

I have dosed for the last 3 days and my Mag is now at 1300. Thank you again for the help.
CA = 400
Alk=3.2 meq

Thats great news.

In your 150, it does take a lot of supplement to initially raise the magnesium that much. The nice thing is, once you get it there, it depletes much slower than cal and alk. :)

Primetime33,
I did not reread all the post but Mg is a salt, check your SG so you did not raise it out of the limits. FWIW!

Ok, I admit i'm a little dense but want to make sure I understand this correctly.

You took 46.7 oz. of MagFlake (dry ingredients) and diluted it in 114.5 fl oz. of RO water?

John C.

No John

If one wants to raise the Mg++ 300 ppm in 140 gallons of tank water and you are using ...

1. Randy's DIY Mag = 114.5 oz is added to the tank but should be done in 1/3 dosages over 3 days

First day add 38 oz
Second day add 38 oz
Third day add 38 oz

OR

2. Mag Flake = 46.7 oz is added to the tank but should be done in 1/3 dosages over 3 days

First day add 15.5 oz
Second day add 15.5 oz
Third day add 15.5 oz
