elevated levels of Mg can relax mollusks (snails, clams etc.) to the point where they get easily preyed upon.
Depending on whether magnesium sulfate or magnesium chloride was used to raise your Mg you could create an imbalance in ions in your aquarium.
It's recommended that elevated sulfates be avoided.
I keep my mag at 1500ppm..there has been times when its been around 1600ppm...I dose 2 part so I like a higher Mg so it naturally and gradually falls between 14-13ppm before I bump it up again....(epsom salt) mag sulfate....I also do weekly water changes so worrying about elevated sulfates is not an issue.
I think up to 1600ppm you are ok but higher than that you may run into problems. I dont think many people have had it that high for extended periods of time on purpose.
