Magnesium?

I use BRS magnesium Sulfate and Magnesium chloride mixed as part of my Balling method or Balling Light. On Fauna Marin Trace bottles it says "The new method doesnot require magnesium sulfate as it becomes to strongly concentrated and causes ion displacement in aquarium water."
Is BRS Magnesium Chloride the same as Magnesium Chloride Hexahyrate?
I plan on getting 5G bulk Magnesium and if I dont have to use sulfate I dont want to buy it. Thanks for any clarification on this.

I've been dosing Mag for years..first by just using Magflake(chloride) alone, but in recent years I have been using a recipe of 5 cups of Magflake with 3 cups of Epson salt(Sulfate) mixed in a gallon of RO/DI water without ill effects. In most reefs Mag isn't being depleted as quickly as other elements so it's something that isn't dosed on a daily basis like Alk and Cal. So to answer your question you probably can't do harm by either using it or not. I've been using the sulfate part just to make the Mag a more complete element...I'm sure there is a more scientific response to your question which you would get a better answer to in the chemistry forum.....
