Magnifica Feeding Question

Well it has been about 4 weeks now that i have had my Magnifica. The first day I had him i feed him a nice portion of silver sides and he ate it all.

Since then, he has not taken a bit of silverside from me at all. I am very confused, because he looks great, my two clowns have been hosting since 2 days after i put him in. He is extended and looks amazing.

I have a few clams and lps in the tank and I dose with DT's phyto regularly, clams love that stuff. My system runs 20k Metal Halide lighting. Everything in my tank does very well.

I am wondering, does a magnifica feed off of phyto? I can not explain why he will not eat any silverside.

Any thoughts?

Rob

In my experience with magnificas, silversides are not their favorite food. Next time you are at the grocery store try getting some scallop (make sure it is the non-water added type). Many times they will give you a couple of those small dangly side muscles for free, otherwise the amount you need will cost about 13 cents.

i have tried the scallops and my older H. Magnifica is not too crazy about them.. loves the silversides though.. i'll give it another shot though..

Are you using the high quality individually quick frozen (IQF) silversides, or the stinky catfish bait frozen in a block silversides? Mine don't like the stinky ones, but love the IQFs or fresh anchovy. They also will eat bits of scallop, but be careful to buy the super-premium drypack scallops, since the bargain ones are plumped up in sodium phosphate solution.

FWIW the silversides I have tried were the block ones. I'll have to go back and try the individual ones.

The label "watter added" on scallops means that that chemical was added.

I've found that anemones can be picky about what they "like" even within the same species.

My ritteri only liked a certain brand of silversides. . .no kidding. That brand is "Sally's Silversides". The type I got from another LFS would go un-eaten. I also found that my ritteri preferred smaller pieces, from 1/4" to 1/2" in size.

Now my giganteas started out on silversides, but their feeding response was not very strong. When I tried krill, it was like night and day. They immediately fold in to consume the food.

Must be related to what they consume in nature. . .

:D
