unfortunatley i have several....hundred of these little fellas some actually getting larger.(maybe not a hundred but definitley around 50 or so) ive tryed the jj, lime juice, (no lemon yet) hot lime juice, and have direct injected with syringe. i plan on doing a small reset to the tank soon and taking out the rocks possible with these guys on em, should i soak em in kalk water or any other suggestions/experiences that may help me would be much appreciated. i cant soak all the rocks as there is coral growth mixed in with some of them, so those i will really have to be on top of with maybe the lemon juice or hot water?, to finally rid myself of these pests. thx for any replies.
 
you can also try "cooking" the rock look it up in the newbie threads under bare bottom it has a blurb with instructions. basically you rinse your rock and put in the dark for a while it remains alive just cleans out all the extra nutrients and stuff
 
I am not sure the cooking of the rocks would work in this instance b/c they seem pretty tuff and not as dependent on light. I am not sure I read on one post that some of the butterflys will eat them but that can be a totally different problem later on.
 
If you are taking the rock out anyway, you might consider setting up a small tank with a klein's butterfly fish or two. I am not sure they will eat the aptasias down so that they won't grow back, but I have a 20 gal tank that had several hundred aptasia. It was basically wall to wall. One klein's butterfly ate every single one in a matter of a couple weeks and (unlike some copperbands) eats prepared food with gusto as well. I am not positive that they are reef safe, but they would work great for a clean-up tank.
 
I have some and I tried boiling hot water didnt even affect em so I switched to lemon juice it is doing the trick but they are on a rock that is on the back bottom of the tank so what I ve been doing is if I see them anywhere near my corals they get an injection and I purchase a diabetic needle from walmart and I use that to stick it directly in the majano.
 
I make up a kalk PASTE. I just put enough water in a cup of powder so that the kalk is a little bit more wet than tooth paste. I then fill up a syringe and squirt them till they are covered. I have not had any come back after that.
 
I had a 55 that I got rock from someone, and in about a month it was peppered (really peppered) with those. I got 4 pepermint shrimps and they mowed every one down, in about 2 weeks (I think I got a good 1 or 2), and my tank was aptasia free for months, and, I've since spread that rock through out other tanks, aptasia free, and, still is today. I think the cheapest route is a natural predator, and, not every pepermint will do the job, so you need a few, but they will work (with the right one, and, it may take a few). If you cook the rock, you loose all other life on or in it. You may as well have bought dry rock. If you buy a non-reef safe fish, what will you do with it when you're done? Good luck.

I never had luck with a needle and anything injected, but I know some have.

thanks for all the advice and stories. i think ill attempt the kalk paste and vinegar injection. ill let you know how it goes....hopefully more succesful than the lime juice
 
+1 to jade filefish here's mine, I bought under the name of bristletail filefish

how are those jades on coral tho?? my tank is packed pretty tight. and one of those will for sure eat majanoes? before or after it eats all my coral? i wonder if it would be easy to trap later on. thx for the pic and input.
 
Mine is a model citizen expet he ate my sea hare. Just a word of caution do not use a net with jade filefish.

ive done one dosing with the red wine vinegar and the ones i got good are gone! ill keep repeating the process and think i will win the battle but if i ever see a jade filefish ill be tempted to get it. thx for all the help guys/gals
