making salt water

hello to all, i have had my current tank for almost 3 years and always used scripps water. now that i have a decent fish store near me i decided to start mixing my own salt water. i have made 3 batches with neo marine. since the start i have not been good at keeping sps corals. i started loosing corals since i started mixing. i'm a little troubled by this, here i am trying to save a buck on gas and i'm loosing corals. the parameters are good, i mixed the water to match my tank. has anyone encountered this?

i'm thinking about getting rid of the salt and getting my water from scripps again.

thanks,
john

hey there oscar, i made the switch thinking i was going to save a buck. its like 94 miles round trip. i'm going back to scripps. this mixing your own water is for the birds.

thanks,
john

I think check your new water parameter first because sometime one or more of the parameter will be low/high for you tank. and like Solitude127 said, the TDS maybe too high.
Did you get the temp match before adding to your tank?
Sometime switching from one salt to different salt also affect your corals.

John are you in San Clemente? Is Corona Del Mar / Newport Beach closer? You can get free nsw at the kerkhoff marine laboratory. I don't think that is 95 miles round trip if you were to go there instead. The hours are wierd tho...

thanks for the reply Daniel. i didn't even check the tds on the ro water i got. thats a great idea. i have never matched the temp before and didn't have a problem. i might try mixing 1 more time and if i do, i will check tds and all the pars.

Can you let me know more details on this? Never knew kerkhoff offered nsw and I presume the water is at ideal conditions. If so I am heading down and picking up some..

I think it's only open during the week, like 800 am to Noon. If you google it you should find the address. Or do a search on reef central. I think it's on Dahlia. It's right across PCH where MacArthur dead ends.

I ordered the TDS3 Made by Hanna from Air Water Ice for 22 bucks. Does temp and TDS. Other sites probably have the same one as well.

You need to bring your water up to 77 degrees and test your params. Make sure salinity, alk,ca, mg, ph is ok then match the temp to your tank water. But always let it mix for 24hours and properly aerate the water.

Best check the TDS if you're getting ro/di water from LFS. Best bet is to get yourself a ro/di unit.

i let it mix for like 30 hrs with a the pump i use to get the water to the tank. i do check the salinity of course. i also have a ro/di set up that i use for top off and mixing cocktails.
