Maks And Fins HELP!

I am new at this. I have a trip planned next month we are going to cozumel. I am taking two classes in town next week and then I am going to do a referral course there. I want to buy some fins and a mask anyone got any recommendations. I have looked at sports chalet ebay and craigslist Lots of options?

I would go to your local dive store so you can be "fitted". Not all masks are created equal. Different masks will fit differently, and may not seal (will leak) on your face. Same with fins, most fins are like for example 8-9md, or 9-10lg. So if you actually try them on especially with someone who knows how they are supposed to fit and can usually fit you very easily, you will be much happier. I see a lot of people buying dive gear off the net. IMO mask and fins are more personal items that should be fitted properly, to ensure comfort. Good Luck. We always use Del Mar Aquatics in Cozumel, they are wonderful. Who are you going through?

you could try our twin jet fins and crystal vu mask its not wallet freindly but you get what you pay for
cmon man! if you going to do it, do it right! (nothing to do with DIR) Original Jet fins with spring straps and frameless mask!

ok Ill admit I acutally use OMS slipstreams as I have very dense legs...but theyre still agreat design!

LOL David it seems that you like the jet fins & frameless mask but our freind here is just starting thats why i recommended the much gentler equipment when his more expirense then we can give him the good stuff

You know I bought a mask from Sports Chalet Not the best mask its a Deep See mask. I went to the lake over the weekend to test it out and no leaks so far. I am going to be in warm water so My question is should I go with the Slip on fins Or the fins that you have to buy booties for?
My girlfriends dad is a 15 year diver thats who I am going with. He recommended that I buy the slip ons since it will be warm and I could always use them for snorkling after I have saved up for some nice equipment. I am the type who likes to buy quality first since I learned that everything I buy I always have to upgrade and spend more money.
I think we are diving with pappa something?
Thanks Guys

I dont care for the full foot pocket fins, you can only wear them in warm water and its rubber on skin. I know of people who ended up with blisters because a little sand got in the foot pocket. Get a pair of booties and adjustable fins, good for diving/snorkeling, warm/cold water.

I agree with David if you buy a full foot fins you will only use it once and once you get certified its useless get a boot and the adjustable fins

Thanks for the advise!
Have you guys heard of Papa Howgs In Cozumel?
Change of plans i am going to get certified in Mexico now.
Its cheaper than doing it here and i get a PADI Open water Cert.
Other than A Mask Fins and booties will I need anything else?

Snorkel and weightbelt.
But you can probably rent there.

I just got me a pair of TUSA liberator fins and I love them.
I also have a Deep Sea Mask and no problems.

I've heard of Papa Hogs. I saw the shop when I was down there in May. It looked like a decent outfit. I dove with Aqua Safari. It was ok. I've heard good things about Del Mar and Dive with Martin. Have fun.

Did some diving with Papa Hogs a couple of years ago. They were a good dive outfit.

Hey Justin,

Enjoy your trip. I'm leaving for the Channel Islands in CA today. I have had really good luck with El Mar Diving and Saguaro Sports. They are both in Mesa. Strongly dislike how the general manager at Scuba Sciences treated me. So, I wouldn't reccomend them. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

Hey Justin,

Who you diving with? Where you diving? I might go out Sunday (if the wife allows as I was just out diving this morning) to ... hmm cant remember which island, but theres a sea lion rookery thats full of playful pups right now.
annacappa? no
san miguel? no
clemente? no
cruz? no
hmmm which island was it?

I picked up a pair of Tusa Liberator Fins as well.
I also bought a pair of deep see thermo boots.
I finished my test and pool dives today It was awesome!!!
Now I just have to wait until Aug. 7th and I will finish my
Shore Dives with Papa Hogs. Gosh I can't wait! I was thinking
of maybe picking up a Rash guard Shirt, I don't know If the BC
will give me a rash or not. I also need a watch But I was thinking
if I put $80 bucks into a watch I might as well try to find
a computer for a good price. Is it OK to buy a used dive computer?
Thanks For the Help!!

Can I get a 165foot watch or does it have to be a really good 200 meter watch? I seen a bunch at wallyworld but they were 165' water resistance

Unless your planning on diving to 200 meters, the 165' will do. That said, the high quality expensive watches (I'm talking like a Citizen, not Rolex ;) ) will actually be cheaper over time due to outlasting the cheap $50 watches.

By the way, Leisure Pro is an online retailer that guarantees proper fit of some items, so if you get them and they don't fit, they'll pay shipping to replace them. Their prices are also generally great, although some people avoid them because they're not technically authorized dealers, so warranty support may be questionable.
