Male Clarkii on his last legs

Our clarkii pair were the first fish we added 4 years ago.

Yesterday I noticed the male was breathing very heavily, mouth always open, fins starting to fray and his eyes were popeyed. It's so heartbreaking to watch the female nudging him around to get up and swim. He has been healthy all this time, extremely hardy and no other fish is showing problems. At feeding time he reacted to the food but whether couldn't see it or just couldn't eat I can't tell. Mysis hit him in the nose but he didn't take it.

He is on his side now next to the nem barely breathing.

The pair were wild caught and I know size in wild caught is not an accurate deteminator of age. Could he just be old? What are the signs of old age? I can't see any visible signs of disease. Just what I described above.

Only other point I can think of is they host a RBTA and up to now have been breeding every 2 weeks or so. Last clutch of eggs was about 2 weeks ago.
