mandarin getting enough food?

Clearly you have nothing to learn about mandarin dragonettes, fuges or anything else for that matter.
Thousands of these fish are purchased every year and most perish at the hands of people who do not understand their needs and requirements.

I am glad yours is doing well and I hope it continues to do so.

They perish because people are under the false impression that all they need to do is put a refugium on the tank and the mandarin will be fine. If people took the time to train the fish to be fed there would be far less deaths.

At the shop I work at, we train all the fish to eat and show people how to feed them before they buy and make sure they understand the requirements. We havent had a person loose a mandarin that we have trained yet.

rgentry123, the fish will be fine with those tank mates, but you still need to train it to be fed mysis if you really want a healthy fish.

Hi SeeDemTails. I like your way of feeding your mandarin with a tube. I've been shutting off my pumps and using a turkey baster and feeding my spotted mandarin by putting the frozen food on the sandbed near wherever he is, but the other fish also go crazy trying to get it. Are you able to feed your mandarin with the tube like this when he's at the bottom of the tank, or does it only work with a short tube at the surface of the tank? Do you have any luck at your LFS training the Green Mandarins (Psychedelic? - I thought the spotted mandarins were called Psychedelic but then I've seen both types of mandarins called Psychedelics). I bought the spotted/target mandarin specifically because I've read that they were easier to train to eat frozen food, which I thought was really important since I only have a 53 gallon tank with 55lbs of live rock. I've had mine for 2 months, and he's fattening up nicely. He was really thin when I brought him home (didn't notice that at the LFS). He eats frozen mysis, enriched brine and bloodworms with gusto. Thanks. Pam

cool..
i have always wanted a mandarin, but didnt want to get one, because i was afraid it would not get enough to eat.

im setting up a 45g right now, i want a nonaggressive tank (my 145g is aggressive) and i would love to have a mandarin in it in a years time..
this might be a silly Q but would it be possible to have butterflies with a mandarin if they all feeds on prepared foods?

fish i plan on getting for the 45g:
4-5 young banggai cardinals
2 klenii butterflies

and then i would love a mandarin,, but i guess it would not work our very well..

ok wrasses will take out my pod population pretty quick right?
What other types of fish eat pods? I have a female mandarin in my 210 and would like to add a male, but I'm not sure if the rest of my fish eat copapods...
Thanks!

I've successfully kept a Mandarin in my 75 gal for over a year. I have a 3 to 4 inch SB and a good amount of live rock. Can't say how many pounds since I bought the tank used and never weighed the stuff. I later added more live rock from another used tank. He's grown steadily and is quite the chubby little fellow. No fuge, unless you can call a small plastic kitchen sink utensil container with suction cups and some rubble in it a fuge. No target feedings, this guy cruises all day, dawn to dusk and goes about his business unphased by almost anything. I allow the back glass in my tank to become overgrown with coralline and other algae, even some hair algae which I've heard can be a refuge for pods. When I look into the tank after lights out using a small headlamp, I can see tons of pods and other creatures emerging from the live rock and sand.
I added this guy to the tank about 3 months after setting it up, but keep in mind it was a previously owned set up and the live rock didn't take long to get repopulated. I occasionally see him gobble up a piece of CycloPeeze that drops to the SB but that's an exception, mostly he cruises for pods. Other than a couple of episodes of him going almost completely pale soon after I added him to the tank, he's been as healthy as can be. So strictly from my experience, if a Mandarin can do well in my 75, I'd say your 90 gal should not be an issue and your girlfriend could be right about the paranoia. Just keep an eye on the little fella and rest assured, you'll be able to tell easily if he starts getting too skinny.

Yes, I have trained both types.

I feed mine at the surface because it is easier to keep the other fish away. I like to feed him on top of a powerhead.

I would like to try this with my mandarin. Would you please tell me how much food you put through the tube? How long is the tube? What kind of food? How often do you feed? How long does it normally take before the fish responds to the tube as a food source? Sorry for all the questions but I want to be sure I understand completely. Thanks

I add a bottle of Reef Nutrition tigger pods to my tank and sump every 3 or 4 months and my mandarin is very fat.

I ordered some this morning to add to my fuge. I will continue to do so but I would feel a little more comfortable if I can train him to take an alternate food source. I am just not sure how to do it.

GOOD LUCK to you. I have never gotten mine to eat for me but I have not tried the hose trick. I saw a video once that a man trained his mandarins to go into a baby food jar and eat red fish eggs. The mouth of the jar would keep out bigger fish but would let the mandarin in. I tried this but my mandarin would never go in. I think it really depends greatly on the individual fish.
