Mandarin Spawning

search around there is info out there, its not an easy task

in short, find the smallest of planktonic food S -SS rotifers use a LOT in a container that keeps them suspended , move to L then treat like clowns just longer time frame

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the help! The website looks like it will be alot of help. I have the book, Breeding Guide to Marine Fishes and the Clownfish one. The hardest part is collecting them because once you come close to them they stop spawning. Or Two, the water flow in my tank disperses them instantly. Any ideas on collecting them? I can tell the night I know they will spawn by watching my female.

Thanks,

Carolyn

turn off the water flow before spawning collect when there done

And don't forget to turn the pumps back on afterward in your excitement about all your Mandarin eggs!

This is the first spawn I have seen with Mandarin. Great video. Can you raise the spawn in captivity like you can clowns?

Mandarins spawn pelagic eggs, which means that the eggs themselves float and hatch in the plankton. Clowns lay demersal eggs: The eggs stick to the substrate until they hatch and then larvae swim up into the plankton. You can't concentrate mandarin eggs, well, because they are still just the one cell stuck in an egg at that point.

Spawning

Spawning

Thanks so much for all of the info. My mandarins have been spawning since they were in my 55 gallon tank which was years ago. Since the move into the 210 and the move into a house from the apartment it took a little bit. But now they are spawning quite frequently, and a few people questioned me about it. So I made sure I video taped it this time. It's hard because they do the mating ritual from half hour to hours before the actual spawn, and they swim up and down until they get it perfect. I'm hoping to get a better video camera to catch it next time. My next spawn I am going to try to raise them. I guess if I did seahorses, pipefish, cuttlefish, my next goal now is madarins. Again, Thanks so much for the info and I will keep you posted on my progress!

I'm so glad to see you on here. Every since both of the Matts have been working with mandarins I've been thinking back on you and wondering how you are ? I'm so glad you are still around !!!!!

rsman,
I tried to PM you but your box is full. How many mandarins did you raise and what did you feed them? I have a terrible memory and a few years back watchman were the only things on my mind.

inbox should have room now, remembering its been a while for me also!!! :D

I got really really good at getting them to about 4 months old! id end up with 12 ish in a 10 gallon tank closer to a year

at any density worthy of having fun with agression was killing off numbers of babies, my most sucessful first foods was wild caught, the posts of large womens leggings floated around for a while back when i was talking about them much !!!!

I have a 150 gallon fish tank with no fish, and a 250 gallon pond with no fish. but otherwise im alive and well :D

Well I'm glad you're alive and well !!!!! Women's leggings is starting to ring a bell....pretty funny. I have heard a few stories of agression. That does suck. But boy your efforts should be more known rsman. Now go get some fish. Heck come here I have plenty. LOL And hang around for a while. You know mandarins are all the rage. haha
