are these guys hard to keep? And also, what do they eat? Lady at the LFS told me he'll scavange through my substrate and live rock..

yes they are. NOT a beginners fish at all. They require tons of pods, which are hard to keep a high enough supply of them for your fish. A fuge is a must imo for manderins, and even then, many people still have to suppliment pods to their systems, which is gonna be a lot of money. The only way i'd get one is if you can find one that will accept other foods, such as mysis or smethng similar.

Mine I've had for coming up on two years now.. I've got a 120g with about 200lbs of LR (some of it is really dense so it looks like about 120lbs), but the little mandarin just hovers around and doesn't bother anything but the copes and stuff it eats in the rockwork. What a great beautiful peaceful fish. I also occassionally feed live brine and every now and then the madarin will eat one or two.. but not that often. Oh I also have a 15g fuge.

They certainly can be. It's a fish that I'd recommend waiting for quite awhile before purchasing. Large supply of pods is a plus, so letting them multiply with pod piles(piles of rubble rock) can only help. Finding one that will eat prepared foods also is ideal.
